I have been reading over through some subjects and im confused, some people have been saying that their 6.4ls have been puffing black smoke, but others say that their tips are perfectly clean. So which one is it? Are the new 6.4's gona be true power smokers or are they gona be regulated until the tree huggers get their way??
5500 miles on F450 pipes have soot, been watching for smoke, but have not seen any.
2300 miles on F350 pipes are clean.

man thats really a downer, I've been seeing companies allready putting smoke stacks on the market, why are they doing this when no smoke is gona run through the exhuast? They might as well start making them for toyota tundras..
Certaily would lleep regen heat out of harm's way. Just be sure they are at least double wall insulated like a stove pipe LMAO

Here is my theory. I'll bet everyone that has soot in their exhaust is having alot fewer regens. My F350 with the clean exhaust seems to regen about every 200 miles almost like clock work. The F450 with the sooty exhaust does not regen near as often, like every 600 miles. The F450 also had a clean exhaust for the first 2000 miles, I remember looking at the tail pipe at about that time and thinking that it was awful clean.
Just look at it this way, probably within this month, there will be upwards of 50,000 2008 Superduty's on the road. In another 2 months we should really begin to see if there are any severe problems.

1500 miles and the tail pipe is clean no soot or smoke. I have put an infrared thermometer on the tail pipe during regen. The highest temperatures I have seen are around 430 degrees F.

I have 2,000 miles on my 2008 F350. I drive this truck very hard and I've never seen any hint of smoke and the pipe has zero soot.
Here's a picture of I just took of the inside of the tailpipe after 2000 miles. Inside the tailpipe view.

That's exactly what it's supposed to look like. I'm telling you, anyone with soot has a severe problem with the DPF. I don't care what the engine is doing, how many regens you have, whatever, the entire point of the DPF is to stop soot, period. If you have soot on your tailpipe, the DPF is not performing as intended. As in, it literally must be broken apart inside, or the filter media has come unsealed from the case. I can't think of another way soot could get by it.
I foresee a lot of warranty DPF replacements in Ford's future, and perhaps a vendor's feet held to the fire.
