tailgate step?

I think Ann Coulter could say it best. Sort of a "sissy" thing.

Hmm, My grandfather when he was 80 had a problem with bad knees and would have welcomed something like that step on his truck. He wrestled at the state fairs back in the 20s 30s and 40s and at 70 I saw him straighten a horse shoe on a bet. He was about 5' 6" and maybe 140 pounds, but could put a man twice his size on his knees with a handshake. Sissy? I doubt it, but years of hard work took it's toll and he would have appreciated a handy step up. I suspect there are a lot of tough older farmers, ranchers and contractors who would feel the same. I guess all of us sissy's who are getting a little older will have to put up with your thoughtless comments. Other than that, thanks for such a useful post, great information!

Agreed.

Considering the original poster is born Oct 1950, I'd say he's probably saying that tounge-in-cheek.

OK. I'll say it. I agree with you.

Ford has no R&D money for better gas engines, or side curtain airbags (also sort of sissy, but potentially life-saving). But Ford has plenty of R&D money for that step?

Re: tailgate step?

I too, thought that the step would be kind of unnecessary. That is until I tried it. I use to be able to run and jump up into the bed of my truck. Few years later, few more pounds on the body, twenty years of long grinding hours on the flight deck, now 7 years of working on elevators and escalators, that "sissy" step is a welcome addition. I tried it and it really works very well, well worth the cost to me. I tried it recently and at the car show, it is very sturdy and that handle helps when carrying stuff up to the tool box. One other benefit, I think that the step equipped tailgate is counterbalanced or cushioned. All I know is that it is much easier to close and it drops softly. Side curtain airbags would be a welcome addition, wish they were available, but the step is available and I sprang for it.

Re: tailgate step?

Sissy is a navagation system in a truck, if you don't know where you're going, stay home.

The step, I like it I know alot of "old" people who could use it, myself at 27 yep, I'd get it too. Most of the old folks I know would get the step and leave the nav system for the youngsters who allways seem lost to begin with.

Re: tailgate step?

I already have a very reliable navigation system. My wife and a road map. Only time I could see the offered navigation system is if I were to get lost in Washington, DC, especially Southeast.

These addresses could be in either CT, NY, MA or RI....That's alot of street maps to have keep in my truck.

But you miss my point.

No one is going to buy the Ford just to get the tailgate step. If you are buying a Ford anyway, you might pop for the step. It's a "wanna have".

On the other hand, motor/tranny choice might make a difference in what brand you buy. Ballsy motors are a "gotta have".

So Ford was spending (some amount of) bucks on a "wanna have", while it killed "gotta have" programs.

I don't know what you call it, but in my industry that is called selling "sizzle" not "steak".

Chevy did the same thing a few years ago with the Malibu. The chief engineer was bragging about how he was able to keep $$ in the budget to engineer a cup holder on the left side of the dash. The problem is that he forgot about the rest of the car, which was mediocre at best. Now the car is dead, the plant that built the car is dead, and my bet is that the chief engineer is now delivering pizzas for a living.

That's the benefit of being fat and slow in high school. It doesn't get any worse with age.

I can proudly say that I can run as fast (20 minute mile), jump as high (6 inches) and do as many push-ups (1-2) today as I could 30 years ago.

Hard to miss something that you never had.

Best idea I have seen on that truck. Some of us get older and worn out parts sure appreciate the step and pole.
