Thinking of buying new..advice please

Looking to buy new...I currently have a 2005 6.0 XLT crew cab 4x4, mbrp 4" turbo back, banks 6 gun, AFE air intake, accufab intake elbow, leveled on 33" tires. The truck has been great...but I want new. How is the 6.4 fuel economy. Has the 6.4 had any major problems? Am I better off keeping what I have or would new be the way to go???

If your 6.0 is running fine and has been trouble free stick with it. The 6.4 is a much more refined set-up and runs so much more smooth but is amazingly complex plus due to the emissions systems you will see about 2mpg less unless you really drive like a grandpa.... If you do then you can get mileage close to the 6.0... If you have money to burn then get the 6.4 it really is a extremely nice truck. Except for a couple part issues the 6.4 has been relatively problem free. If you go with a let over 08 you can get some serious money off. Most are walking away with a 50k truck for very upper 30s after all rebates....

Keep the 6.0

Do not walk away from these trucks...RUN. I see that you like to mod your truck another reason to RUN away. Just Lemon lawed the POS after numerous problems and 11mpg mixed driving. Wish my 6.0 did not get hit by a dump truck.

I am in the same boat my mostly trouble free 05 is at 99,203 miles... In the shop for 2 injectors and a turbo, oil leaks etc.. Already had head gaskets and EGR. I look at the new ones and sigh. I have even though about going down to a 09 half ton with max tow for my 24ft enclosed.

Mileage isnt that great, but the rest of the truck is SWEET! It is a better motor than the 6.0, IF you want to mod and dont mind the warranty risk it will make more HP with a chip and straight pipe than a 6.0 could. I do miss my 6.0 a bit but not that much.

I'm finally going to break down and buy a new truck. I've said on here lately how much I like the new Fords. I think i'm about to put my money where my mouth is. I'm going to try both the Ford and the Dodge but just looking at the interior there is no contest the Fords interior is amazing. From what I read on here the new 6.4 is holding up well as much as any of the new engines are (the Duramax is a great engine but GM trucks are just to soft). Being a confessed Dodge man I'm thinking seriously about pulling the plug on a new Ford. I'm wondering if the Ford dealers are willing to deal like the Dodge dealers are? I hope so I change my mind about 20 times a day thinking about a truck payment after being without one for along time.

I owned a '96 and '01 Super Duty diesels and switched to a Dodge/Cummins in 04 due to all the problems of the Ford 6.0. I drove all three to about 100k miles and never had a problem with any of them. ZERO. I have a friend that is a diesel mechanic at a big Ford commercial shop and he said the 6.4 is awesome. He recommended his dad to get one and me as well. Couldn't be happier. Very quiet in the cab and smooooth. Yes it's a pig on fuel, but they all are. With some mods I am hoping on a boost on mpg. Hwy mileage is as good as any diesel trucks I have owned, about 15 mpg. around town it drops off to about 12 at best. The tires, wheels, and lift knock off about 2 mpg.

Hi everyone,

Like Barry and Carbon, I'm considering upgrading, and I'm concerned about the new diesels. I'm doing it mostly to improve safety, and to make it easier for my wife to be able to drive safer than she can with our 02. She doesn't get the shifting and Torque Converter Lock Up Switch things when in the hills or mountains. The new Tow/Haul mode tranies and the better HP/Torq of the new motors is very encouraging - along with the new stability controls.

I've looked at the Maxed out F150 5.4, the F250, and the Chevy Duramax. I'd have to change the seats out in the new F250's, as OEM's don't work for me anymore - as in no protective headrests for folks of my 6'4" frame, as my 02 has.

My 02 has 75K trouble free miles as set up in my sig. To keep it, I'd want to BTS the Trans, and upgrade the Turbo, but that would not help the driving issues my wife has. It would make it stronger for easier towing though.

What to do ????????????

Harold

Well its like this.... The new trucks have new emmisions junk and thats just how it is. All manufactures are having their issues and GM is having fewer with their engines cause the engine has been out since 2000. Obviously, they have had time to perfect it. Its just that simple. Now the 6.4 has done much better out of the gate than the 6.0 ever did so that being said it seems to be a better motor. It has more power, its quieter, smoother, and starts amazingly in cold weather. Yes fuel mileage is poor especially compared to the GM, BUT you need to keep in mind this truck is way heavier than either a Dodge or GM. Actually, its curb weight is at least 1100lbs more than GM (comparing diesel to diesel) so you need to put at least (2) four wheelers in the GM bed to equal things up. Yes this weight hurts mileage but if you drive both trucks at max weight then you will appeciate the better built truck. This is why many reviews prefer the Ford trucks for the overbuilt frames, breaks etc. The Chevy payload in the 3/4ton version is more but in the 1ton trucks its less. The GM and Dodge are also quicker 0-60 and in the 1/4mile but mainly due to their lighter weight. One last note I'll mention is that when i was looking a trucks the Ford sales rep told me to take the F250 over a curb or high obsticle to see how stout the frame is and then to do the same with the competition. Well i can tell you the Chevy definitly flexs more when putting the truck off angle so I'm confident saying that the Ford truck is built amazingly strong.

As sawtooth said, the Ford Super Duty is a really strong truck. A life long friend of mine is a service manager at a large auto and truck garage. He is a die hard Chevy guy. It's all he owns. When I was thinking about another 3/4 - 1 ton truck he said stick with the Ford,it's a better built truck. He owns a 1/2 to Chevy. It works for him,but he said if you need a heavy duty truck,Nothing beats the Ford. When a Service manager that is a Chevy guy tells you that,it speaks volumes.

I will not be selling or trading any of the other trucks in. I am looking to add another one to the fleet. I am not sure I wanna wait or be the guinea pig on the next new motor set up in the 2010. So no huge powertrain or motor issues with the 6.4?
