The ticking blues

Anyone have an update on a possible fix? This is the most unsettling noise. My "tick" is getting louder. I have this urge to stop and add oil in hopes it will stop.

I'm afraid too many trucks will be effected and Ford will just refuse to fix it, especially if it's going to be an expensive fix.

This thing sounds like my old Ford with 280k on it.

Try Stanadyne fuel additive. This has worked for some folks, and I use it in mine with no ticking- but only 4K on it. Good luck.

SD, Just curious if you have a Huntsville or Indy motor in your truck. I wonder if the tick is only with one of the factories or both. Hope you get a usable answer. Thanks, Tim

SDdriver:

Welcome to the annoying tick. I posted the SSM from Ford a few weeks ago on here and engineering is still investigating. I have been going to the dealership every week to complain, which is probably doing no good. I have read where GM had this similar concern and stated the same thing, that it is normal......harmonization of the crankshaft / bearings / block. That what produces the horrible "spark plug wire arcing" tick! I hear it mostly on deceleration and at idle when the engine is hot (same as described in the SSM). Everyone around me can hear this when I am idling.

After reading other websites, I have found that some trucks will exhibit this right after an oil change or fuel filter change. Approximately 1500 miles after the filter change, the noise will disappear and then re-appear when the filter change is done again. Some dealers have had success changing the #5 and #7 piston and connecting rod to eliminate it.

This noise is driving me crazy and I am losing it trying to figure out why Ford / International cannot work faster to come up with a fix (not a band-aid). A simple PCM update / flash will not fix this concern - in my opinion!

This is scary. If that's the case Ford will never fix these trucks, due to cost.

I know, that is scary! I have tried that stupid octane boost and it was absolutely useless for this tick. This was before I found out that it was base engine related.

We should all ban together and send a huge email to the Ford executives telling them how pissed off we are because of this darn ticking. Maybe that would put some pressure on International and Ford SD Engineers to get this issue solved. I am sick of hearing that random tick everyday....it is driving me crazy.

Ford might be a little busy developing the Scorpion replacement engine and battling IH in court at the moment. Seems like they are much more interested in the new engine and lawsuits than they are at fixing the existing problems. You've got plenty of 06-07 6.0's that are warrantied until 2011-2012 that will also need to be dealt with. Hopefully they will do the right thing.

You are exactly right. I hope something is published soon. And if the tick is not deterimental to the engine, then I hope there is an easy fix such as a dampner of some sort. This would be better instead of having the dealership pull the engine, and replace internal parts. It just does not make sense right now. Ford's SSM states this is normal and it varies from vehicle to vehicle, but the dealership and other internet sites stated that replacing #5 and #7 piston and connecting rod resolved the concern. Maybe it is harmless, but we just cannot live with the noise.

With that noise going on, you would be hard press to hear when something else went wrong.

As I've posted before, I don't own an 08. But I drove a demo with "the tick". As a matter of fact 1 demo wouldn't start. And another felt like it was dragging an anchor behind it. I feel bad for you owners who have a bad one. I take meticulous care of my vehicles, I can't imagine being told "were working on it". Thats all B.S.

Why do you say it's BS? It took GM a long time to fix a similar issue on the Duramax.

Ah time will tell, some will try to convince us that "ticking" is normal, just like they tried to convince us that "leaking" was normal on the 6.0.

I was told that smoke in the cab was normal.
