Why do you say it's BS? It took GM a long time to fix a similar issue on the Duramax.
The issue isn't similar... The subtle tick on my Duramax is hardly noticeable as with most who have the DMax tick. This truck on the other hand has a much more pronounced tick. Much more indicative of a problem waiting to happen. The two are unrelated IMO.

No confirmation on the "1 quart overfull" theory yet? It was rumored that the engine really takes 14 quarts of oil at change, not 15, and the extra oil was aerating and causing the tick in the lifters. The tick would go away after the engine consumed the extra oil. Probably just that, a theory.
I guess I was lucky, I had the truck in to the dealer for it's first oil change at 2700 miles, no tick before or since. Assuming they put in the full 15 quarts. Curious to see if the tick happens after the first fuel filter change though.
Has the tick been identified in both Huntsville and Indy motors or just one plant? I have a Huntsville motor, don't know if it matters.
Keep us posted via this forum!

I do have a Huntsville engine. The SSM for this issue does not specific one or the other engine manufacture locations.
The noise is very distinctive but the frequency varies from vehicle to vehicle. I did hear another truck at the dealership but it seemed to be a more constant tick. I'm just wondering why it occurs after an oil change....strange, very strange. At least I know it will quiet down 2k or 3k miles after an oil change.
PLEASE HELP FORD. I love the truck but the tick is driving me crazy! I will continue to update the forums as I get more info. Please let me know if one of you finds something.
I just started hearing some ticking while driving to work in the morning. When the engine is cold and it is not under load, like when slowing for a light or stop sign. It does it mostly between 1500 rpms and 1000 rpms. When it is just idling, I do not hear it. But as long as it is running okay, I am not taking it in for any work. My clutch finally stopped squeeking, so everything is running OK. Besides, I have the 200,000 mile engine warranty.
Hey guys, whats up? My truck had the tick after the second oil change at 5,000 miles. Ford told me to just keep driving it and that was from the regional service rep. I kept driving it and it went away. I now have 8,900 mile and am getting ready to do the 10,000 mile service hopefully it will not return.

Hopefully it will not return, but this sounds exactly like mine. After every oil change the tick is there for about 1k or 2k miles then disappears. Good luck and hopefully there will be a service solution soon.
A new TSB was issued for this. Basically, it says it is normal and due to an engine oil pulsation: "This noise is caused by the relationship between engine block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and oil viscosity / film. This relationship allows a pulsation that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. This condition is present on all diesel engines."
It also states that it was typically present in previous engines, but was masked by engine noise. According to the TSB, vehicle testing and engine teardowns have confirmed that it does not affect long term reliability.
Is that TSB for ticking noise or tapping noise? I've heard intermittent ticking like an electrical arch from a plug wire from engines and also a totally different tapping as in a liffter tap type of noise.

My tick sounds like a loose lifter in a 351w. My dealer service to-do list included a complaint about the ticking and also an oil change. The oil and filter were changed and the ticking has gone away. I have 65k of daily heavy off-road towing and I follow the maintenance sched to the "t". I'm not sure if the ticking gets noisier when it's closer to a 5k oil change, but then I usually have some tunes going and don't listen for the noise.
