Just bought a new 08 F-350 and took delivery on 9/25. With only a few hundred miles on it so far the truck has already developed to "tick". I hope trading my Dmax in wasn't a mistake.

I had the tick just after my first oil change and it went away at about 7,000 miles. Im going in for a third oil change on thursday plus the fuel filters changed. I will let you guys know if my tick returns also.

Had my second oil change at 12K and I have noted a tick, more like a arch spark sound that is intermittent. I also noted that my coolant was low and I topped it up with a litre of 50/50 mix of Motorcraft Gold and distilled water, seems to have stabalized and there is no noticeable leak. I'll inform you all if I note the tick goes away in a few thousand kilometers.

It also states that it was typically present in previous engines, but was masked by engine noise. According to the TSB, vehicle testing and engine teardowns have confirmed that it does not affect long term reliability.
That sounds like a load of BS to me. Harmonics and pulsation cannot be good for long term durability. It means metal is moving and over time moving metal is going to fracture at it's weakest point. It may be true that they've run an engine a certain number of hours or cycles, but these types of failures tend to be a bit unpredictable. One thing is certain, at some point something will break. What we don't know is whether it will be 50K, 100K, 200K, or more.

As far as Cummins Engines go, I don't recall any threads about a "tick" problem with either the 5.9 or 6.7 engine. I won't say it doesn't exist, but if it does it must not affect many engines. I have a 5.9 and 6.7 and neither has a tick.

Dude, a few commas would be nice...but this post got me thinking, has anyone else tried a pure synthetic like amsoil to fix the ticking? Maybe Ford's synthetic blend isn't all its cracked up to be.

I had the ticking at idle after the first oil change at 3000 miles. I changed it early since I had already hauled 1000 miles with a trailer and was getting ready to tow 10k camper 1500 miles. As soon as I noticed it, I took it out on the highway and ran her up to 3200 rpm about 4 or 5 times over a 5 mile stretch. Got home a few miles away and parked it at idle and the ticking was gone and has not returned. But, it sounds like it is too early to tell since I still only have 5400 miles on it.

Everybody's a comma-edian...

Back to the synthetic... Since this problem seems to happen most frequently after an oil change, and most if not all the posts I have read on this involve dealer oil changes, it seems logical that oil is somehow involved.

Has anyone heard the ticking before the first oil change?

I have had two oil changes so far and used the Ford new syn oil and the tick is bad. But from the factory it was quiet. Can I go back to reg oil???? I might try it to see if the tic goes away.

Panther,

Is that a pure synthetic from Ford? I guess I haven't actually confirmed what Ford is using from the factory. I was told it was a synthetic blend but not a pure synthetic. What is their pure synthetic (viscosity)?

I was at my dealership the other day, and it seems for has now added a full synthetic oil to their line up for the 6.4. They offer the standard synthetic blend and now a full synthetic. Hope this clears things up! I use the regular ford blend oil, but I have really been considering going with amsoil in the future.

As stated in other forums, could it be a matter of oil volume (level) and not oil type. Only one oil change on mine (done by dealer) with no tick (yet). Otherwise I would experiment with level myself. Why would the tick fade as the miles go by and return right after the next oil change if it were oil-type related?

I hope somebody figures this issue out soon.
