I have the same ticking sound on mine. In addition, when I tow I hear a sound that seems like it's coming from about the center of my truck just below the firewall. The best way I can descibe it would be to say it's simular to what a fan sounds like when it's hitting the shroud. It goes to the beat of the RPM, usually when it's a lower gear. Will go away the moment it shifts to a taller gear and RPM's drop. Every once and a while I'll here it momentarily when shutting truck off as the motor comes to a stop.
My truck is going to the shop on Monday. they think there is something broke in the up tubes for the turbo. I also have a lot of soot in the exhaust tips.
Try picking up a bottle of Stanadyne performance formula fuel treatment. I have heard that this cures this problem in some cases. It costs about $.06 a gallon to treat your fuel. I run it every tankful.

How is a bottle of fuel treatment going to fix a piece that has broken into two parts?
The bottle also comes with a lucky rabbits foot.

i have read some of those posts but again I ask a very simple question.
Is a bottle of addative going to fuse to pieces of ceramic back togeather?
I'm not trying to be rude here just display some logic.
I was one who posted that the cetane booster has gotten rid of my engine's ticking. I believe the others were responding to the original post. We shouldn't assume that the problem(s) with your engine are the same as the original poster. Also, I highly doubt the cetane booster will solve everyone's problem, but mine has 14,000 miles on it now without any major problems (knock on wood), and after three oil changes I hear no ticking...might be a coincidence. Good luck with your truck though.

Please don't lash out at my suggestion like some have for the poor guy trying to help by suggesting cetane boster may alleviate the tick. My idea, could what you are hearing is the sound of the fuel injectors opening and closing? At idle these engines are extremely quiet, probably the quietest diesel engine I have heard. What we did not hear on previous PSD's, we can now hear with the 6.4. After driving my 450 this morning for 45 miles, I got home raised the hood with the engine running and the only sound I could make out was the intake suction next to the right side battery, bit of noise from the serpentine belt and cooling fan and the click, click of the injectors going about their work. I have been listening to other 6.4's we have at work, 450/550 cab chassis heavily loaded at work and have not heard anything unusual from under the hood.

Not lashing out just a simple observation. The symptons he described is exactly what I hear in my truck and it is an exhaust system malfuntion not an an internal engine component.
My 08 had the same ticking noise after its first oil change. Started to use fluid service diesel supplement + cetane boost, and my ticking noise has dissapeared.
Very strange coincidence that this is first reported so often right after the first oil change. I have 500 miles on mine and haven't changed the oil yet. Will I get the tick or not, I wonder. Wasn't this the same issue that someone reported Ford disabled one cylinder's valve train at a time to localize the noise, then had the mechanic send back the piston, rod, rings and valve components? Another forum had this same story also... but why after the first oil change (or not at all)?
