The Firestone recall in the United States in the late 1990s which was attributed to more than 100 deaths from rollovers following a tire tread-separation, pushed the Clinton administration to publish the TREAD Act. This act mandates the use of a suitable TPM technology in order to alert drivers of a severe under-inflation condition of their tires. This act affects all light motor vehicles (<10,000 lb) sold after 1 September2007.
Hi all,
Is it <10,000lbs or <10,000GVWR, I rotated my tires and dropped the rears to 60lbs no light, job 3 F350 ,11500 GVWR ?
Pete
I also have a job 3 f250 with factory 20's with goodyear rubber an run 55 psi in front an 52 in rear,no light from the tps an the truck rides nice an smooth.
Just a comment from a guy who's newest truck is a 2000 7.3. The newer they get the more government mandated annoying stuff. Could this be why less people want a new vehicle? All I want is a truck to work on very togh B.C. logging roads, not air bags, not TPMS, not lousy milage, not that damn bonger that tells me I'm parked with door open and key in ignition and so on. Where will it end? Bring back the 1961 International and let freedom ring.
Well, since I posted last in this thread, I did buy a new 2008 F-350 Super Duty. I had BFG T/A K/O's installed before I took delivery. Twice within the first 30 miles, I had the Low Pressure light come on. The dealer reprogrammed it. It only returned. The had put 65 psi in each tire. I later found the reset tool in my glovebox. I pumped the rear tires up to 72 psi because the door sticker says 65 front and 80 rear. I thought the rears at 65 were the problem. Well, I ran the truck and the light never came on. I recently lowered the rears to 65 again, and the light (knock on wood) has not returned.
Two things make me wonder. I too, have a 11,400# GVWR F-350 truck, thus the high rear tire pressure listed on the door sticker. Now, I wonder if I lower the rears to 60 from the current 65psi, will the light again come on? I will try it this weekend. I also wonder if the reset tool I have does something the dealers tool does not, and that is why I did not get the low pressure warning after I reset it with the tool that came with my truck.

I work for a local dealer and have done this myself. Using the ford scanner and software (IDS) it is possible to change out the tire pressure specs. you can even change tire size.
Let me tell you MY story. My dealer has been great except for this- I ordered my '08 with the BFG's in my sig. I got a nail in my tire, went to the tire shop for repair. Went through the steps to re-program the system to no avail. Went back wondering if the sensors had been damaged during the repair. Turns out my dealer put these tires that require 50 psi on my truck, and inflated the rears to 70 just to keep the sensor light out! I ran a $1500 set of tires for 8K miles over-inflated! Needless to say, my dealer got an earful.

I am still certain that there is a setting that can be changed in the ECU. As between the 250, 350, 450 there are a number of wheel tire combinations and I would find it doubtful that the tire pressure is the same across all options. But I have been wrong before.
I live w/ the cluster light and the odo display. I just clear the display w/ the cluster reset buttom everytime I start the truck. I kinda got into that habit.
I think the tire presure recommendation on the door is too high for unloaded driving conditions. Rough ride w/ the stock tires or bigger tires (just play w/ the pressures for best ride comfort and wear).
Grampy Jim weighed in on this. If he reviews this website and says the products they offer will eliminate the annoying light on my truck, I'll consider it. otherwise, I'll write the whole thing off and just deal with it. I looked into it myself, and I was told I was SOL.

I have the same problem with the stupid TPMS light, I lowerd the pressure in my rear tires to 65 PSI becasue they ride too ruff at 80 PSI. If you find out any information on this issue please post your findings. Thanks!
Hey Guys I had a probelm with the light staying on with stock tires and wheels. I carried the truck to the dealer and they rasied the pressure from 50 psi to 75 psi. Well the ride went to crap. I then talk to the local tire shop and they replaced the Air with Nirogen. Then pressure was set at 65 psi and i have had no more problems. Hope it helps you!
