Trailer Life test the 6.4L F450 pickup towing a 20,000 lb 5th wheel

The February 2007 issue has the 2008 6.4L PSD F450 pickup on the cover and a full test starting on page 46 that says " When you absolutly, positively need to tow 24,500 pounds with a pickup. It has a photo towing a top of the line Kountry Aire 5th wheel TT that come with tandem dual wheels (8 tires).

Interesting, it says that the 450 comes with an exhaust gas temp guage and a transmission temp guage...

Thanks for the input. That's a real interesting story, and I hope the new engine delivers like they say. Dependability will be the next issue, which is why I plan on waiting at least a year to order one. I particularly like the optional electric cab warmer. This is a very good idea- hopefully it will keep people from wet-stacking their engines by letting them idle for 10 minutes on cold mornings to get their cab warm.

looking at the photos from detroit that were just posted, you can see the guages on the KR dually pretty clearly: boost, coolant temp, tranny temp, and fuel.

i still don't see the egt guage and i didn't see guages anywhere else in the pics.

guys, the thing has 4.88 gears. i would sure hope it could pull that trailer with no problems. i have been pulling my 5th wheels for years with regular f350 srw, and never had any problems until i made the big mistake of buying a junk-o-matic. my 5th wheels weighs 18k loaded.

Get a clue, the 33,000 lb GCWR requires 4.88's. What was your pin weight on the 18,000 lb 5th wheel when towed with your overloaded SRW F350 ?

The 4.10 is a typo, the F450 pickup with 33,000 lb GCWR has 4.88's. The DRW F350 TowBoss has 4.30's with 26,000 lb GCWR.

Re: Trailer Life test the 6.4L F450 pickup towing a 20,000 lb 5th wheel

Am planning on ordering a new 6.4 real soon. Appears that only the 3.73 rear is available for a F350 4X4 SRW.Since I intend to tow about 16K ( 5th wheel) in Colorado...I sure would like the 4.30's.Am I missing something or is the 3.73 all I can order?

Undergeared in Arizona

Re: Trailer Life test the 6.4L F450 pickup towing a 20,000 lb 5th wheel

Unless something has changed, your first assumption is correct- 3.73 max an the srw F350. It ticks me off, too. I run taller tires, and I want at least stock gear advantage. I'm not sure why they do this. Maybe the Sterling housing isn't real receptive to gears that big. I know I'd like some reasoning behind it, but what I'd really like is the 4.10 in my next truck! BTW, I have no use for a dually- not very good in the mud, and I don't need the extra GVW or the width, and I certainly don't want to pay for two more mudders.

I assume this is aftermarket...quite an expense on a 4X4..especially a brand new one. I can't understand why Ford doesn't offer a steeper rear? I guess the housing may be too small...but that would surprise me..on cars..we used take out 3:36's and put in 4:88's all the time.
