transfer case "skipping and humming noise"

hey,
i have a 08 f350 with auto locking hubs (working great, more of to let u know what i have) and when i put the switch into 4hi with hubs locked or auto it seems like somethings catches and makes a little vibration in the floorboards. so i got fountain tire to take a look and they tracked it to the transfer case. they dropped fluid but there was no metal. they think theres a plate right behind the drain plug that could be blocking "bigger" chunks. so they put new stuff in and quoted me up to 3400 to send it out and do a rebuild. thats the most upper price, could be something small like a a gear or maybe a chain? i dont know if they use chains its just a guess. has anyone else had this issue and what part ended up malfunctioning? btw the 4x4 still works but i only use it if i have too. and no i didnt try 4lo yet but i should and see what happens. also is it a easy job to do a transfer case swap out myslef? im pretty mechanicly inclined and have basic tools. just need to know what a guy needs to do it like a gasket and oil if i just buy a used t case.

If you are doing a used t-case, you will only need fluid....no gaskets needed. Not bad to do at all. If you have some mechanical ability and the willingness, go for it.

thx for the tips so far. my next question is was there options when it came to t cases? or did they only produce one kind? and if not where would i find the info on the housing? and will a t case off of a 6litre work on a 6.4?
