I have a 2008 F350 4x4 with 3.73 gearing. When I tow either my 24ft Race Car trailer (vie tongue) or my 38ft Toy Hauler/5th wheel it shakes/shudders pretty bad when going up a hill at slow speeds. I cannot tell if it is the tranny or rear end. It is worse on heavier load and does not do it when empty.
I talked to service tech at local dealership and he said, well, if it doesnt do it when empty, then we cant figure it out. He suggested I drive the truck to the dealership with the 5th wheel and they could test drive it and see if they could figure it out?
Any thoughts or anyone else have issues.
As a side note, my work truck, a 2004 F150 was doing a similar thing (when empty) as well and the dealership said the driveline needed to be shimmed (????) but I found online where there was a TSB regarding the LSD in the rear but the dealership pulled the old (but your truck is out of warranty-even though we complained about this issue for at least 6 different service calls-before and after warranty and they kept reflashing the computer and saying it was software on the tranny-which it wasnt)
My concern is that I want this issue fixed before my new truck is no loner covered and dont want to get run through the typical stall tactics if someone knows what it could be
I have the same truck....and the same shudder. It's axle wrap, and Ford does know about it. So do the many posters on this site. Scroll down a ways and you'll find my thread on "Trans shudder under load." Many comments.
So far, Grody Ford of Buena Park, CA, has installed one shim on my drive shaft carrier bearing. Pulling my 5er, the shudder is less, but not gone. It's noticeable mostly when accelerating from a stop. It's usually gone by the other side of the intersection. Before the shim, I also felt it at freeway speed (towing, in tow haul mode) when downshifting, either pulling a grade or when changing lanes to pass.
It's beyond me how a truck built to pull could be designed like this. Then, when discovered, can't be fixed without an aftermarket 4-link suspension costing many thousands of $$.
Good luck.......the original thread is down below ... a couple months old now.

Ford now claiming that's not covered under warranty
I have pretty much given up on trying to get the dealerships to do anything. Shimming is not the answer and it seems to be a combination of axel wrap and the rear leaf spring being too soft till you hit the overload spring. The fix - Kelderman air ride 4 link system. PM me for more details on progress on the legal side.
a simple set of tractions bar would fix it, for those tired of the dealer. do those that have the issue have the very thick overload spring? i do a 6" lift and have never had the shudder

Well, then you must be the only one. There are hundreds of people with this same issue. Just got off the phone with my service guy and his response--hmmm, never heard of that before...

I thought, just for giggles, I would check out the Chevy Forum to see if they have any issues..Low and behold, the third or fourth post on the forum I went on is titled "transmission shudder" and they are talking about shimming, etc, etc. So, although I think Ford needs to fix this ASAP and I am pissed that my new 60K truck does this, at least we are not alone I guess and their boards are filled to the brim with all kinds of issues as well. This was on the NEw 2007.5 6.6 Duramax board...
...and for the record DODGE will never be an option for me...

Have the shims fixed the problem for anyone unloaded? I drive mine mainly with little load. The vibration is slight but annoying, especially the noise that comes with it. A poster on another site suggests a 7.3 tranny mount, because its beefier. Anyone try that one?

Ok, so now the dealership wants me to drop off my truck with the 38ft fifth wheel attached so they can drive it around to verify what I am saying. Of course, I got the "i have never heard that before response" to which I then read him off the TSB's that talk about this and forwarded him a copy of some of the responses/fixes that everyone on here as been saying.....
JEEZE LOUISE!
