I have the dreaded shudder in the drive line at take off when towing. This truck has it worse than any truck I've owned.
In addition, when towing at speed I get a shudder when the transmission down shifts. It does it the most when the cruise is on.
I've had the same shudder when not towing and I hit resume on the cruise control. You tell me what's wrong. Torque converter?

"Don't worry be happy". A visit to your friendly Ford dealer should solve the problem. It sounds like you need the TSB for driveline shudder. The 08's have an issue with carrier bearing shimming. The longer 08 leaf springs have had an effect. Your tranny is most likely not the problem.

it either needs a shim, or you are getting some axle wrap, but its not the tranny

Shimming is not the answer......read down a page or two to the long thread on this...."drive line shudder under load"
Get on your dealer.....and please post your results.....we all need the networking on this....Ford is promising a fix within a few weeks. These are far too nice a truck to have this happening!

Do you have the TSB number? I can't find it. I'm going to try and get it to the dealer next week. I don't think shimming is going to help my problem.

heh... axel wrap.... i get lots of axel wrap..... if i hit it too hard comming off the line or empty or 1/2 full i hop right through the intersection... till the turbos spool then it sticks and im gone though sometimes towing when it downshifts it also happens..
P.S. truck is in the shop for semi failed mode/selector doors on the heater-a/c (mostly defroster only) should have it back by the end of the day

I finally had enough time last Wednesday 08/27/08 to take my truck in. The mechanic hooked up his computer and we went for a ride. I couldn't get the truck to duplicate the problem. Nothing showed.
Today, Wednesday 09/03/08 I again went to the dealer. This time, I was dragging my trailer. Same deal as last week, with the same results. Next the mechanic measured the drive line angle at the carrier bearing. The mechanic told me the minimum angle is .50 and my truck was .20 so he shimmed it to .80.
I have the same exact problem as tfunk88 describes in this post when I get in to the hills/mountains. Living in the flat lands, I can't get the truck to duplicate the problem.
The fly in the ointment is the fact that I won't be towing again for some time.
I can't believe how chintzy the carrier bearing is on the 08's. They are nothing like the previous trucks. The mechanic is checking to see if the if the old style will work on my truck. If it does, I'm going to change it out even if I have to pay for it myself. All of this is driving me crazy.
