Angry

I drive mainly highway miles and have ~13k on it. Had the flash done and have only had 0.5 mpg increase.

On our truck, the message 'cleaning exhaust filter' only shows up for ~5 seconds or so... and it gives no indication of when it's complete. I can tell though just by the sound of the turbos when it's complete.

The past couple days have been city driving, and the truck has been trying to do a regen but never could complete because of the stop and go traffic. Last evening on the way home the truck got upset with me and I finally got the "drive to clean exhaust system" message. This morning when I left home I got the same message as I pulled out the driveway. This message doesn't dissapear off the dash. I got on the highway since I was working across town this morning, and the message changed to "cleaning exhaust filter"... and it stayed on the dash this time until 10 minutes or so passed and then it said something like "drive cycle complete".

Have a Job 1 built 4/07 had it in this last april for the seat recall, and they said they reflash it. I see by other post the latest flash will show on the dash read out and if I recall right it won't go into regen at idle. Noticed yesterday I had a regen and nothing showed on the dash read out and at idle it would come up to 1000 rpms in park.Wondering if I have the latest flash?

i posted yesterday about taking my truck in to the dealship for the flash update, today they called and said the mpg update cannot be done be done because i have the banks exhaust on it. He said that i altered the backpressure and the update will acutally cause me to get worse fuel mileage, he said he had tried on other customers trucks and he ended up having to reflash it with the old data, has anyone else heard of this??

if it is going into regen at idle, you do not have the newest flash

its a lie, nothing on your exhaust is going to effect backpressure. even with the stupid little muffler gone...
your dealer is a liar, take it elsewhere.

Got my truck back from the dealer last night, had it in for the newest programming updates, the seat recall, and to have the coolant system Venturi modification done. I don't know if it was the difference between the Focus loaner or what, but my mighty 450 seemed to feel even more lively than usual. Ran great all the way home(55 miles). I did notice when I stopped for fuel($4.69 a gallon) that the "miles to empty" at full tank was way off. Usually with a top of the neck fillup, the reader will say 425-430 till empty, now it says something like 540 miles to empty. Maybe Ford is just trying to make me feel good. Guess it is working, love my truck.
BTW, got a free oil and filter change thrown in to boot.

i went to pick up the truck today and spoke directly with the service manager, he said the reason he did not want to do the updated flash was because he tried it on another truck with exhaust and the whole pcm crashed, i told him let try and see what happens and it worked perfect, so i was able to get my update and also 2 recalls taken care of ( seat bracket and fuel tank bracket) so ill see if this helps will improved mpg

Sorry to take so long to reply.... there are so many people seeking help or answers. Sadly, Gooch would rather bust my chops (as well as other dealer techs) rather than offer some of these folks any sound advice... Makes one a tad reluctant to venture back...

Anyway.... some of this may depend on the service advisers interpretation.... a compolaint of "going on to a fast er idle too quickly when parked" should get a reflash... if that doesn't work, complain of a surge when using cruise control....

As I stated in the above post, had a new flash last april while in for warranty work. The only way I notice mine is in regen is when I stop and put in park and leave idle it will go upto about 1000 rpms after 5 seconds, touch the brake and put in drive and the rpms drop, don't ever see anything on the dash read out. normal? newer flash? need it if so?

bowstring.... sounds like you don't have the TSB 08-13-3 flash. If you did regen would stop as soon as the transmission is put in park. Besides this flash was just available sometime this past June.

Stymie... drove around with a blank display and sure enough the regen display appeared coinciding with the Insight monitor regen warning.

If you have the latest and greatest flash, there will be indications in the message centre.... from memory - the message centre will display "drive truck to clean filter" or something similar (I'm sorry - there are just too many things to try and remember... I am happy enough knowing that this or that procedure should have me looking at the workshop manual).

Personally, I don't think there is mch you can do with a 6.4 that will give both good fuel numbers AND clean exhaust....

The 2010 emissions compliance efforts have the appearance of delivering good power and decent mileage through the use of urea injection and a selective reduction catalyst.... Time will tell.

Quoted for truth. To the poster above claiming only a .5 mpg increase, and driving mostly highway. this flash was to impove around town mileage, not highway
