Turbo 101 Question

Why, when in neutral, if I step on the throttle, does the boost not build. The machine is "smart" enough to only build boost when actually in gear and/or moving.

My question: what manages this component of the turbo process?

Boost is an effect of exhaust pressure.... Without a load on the engine, it is highly unlikely that any significant amount of boost is going to be built.

Unlike a belt driven supercharger, the turbocharger wont build boost until engine conditions demand it.... At idle, the pressure drop across the turbine stage will only be about 17ish PSI.... and the compressor stage is basically "freewheeling". Adding a load to the engine will increase exhaust pressure and this higher pressure drop will cause the turbocharger to spin faster, creating boost (FWIW, this is a little oversimplified).

The turbo is equipped with variable turbine vanes. This allows the ECU to control the backpressure, and, therefore, boost.

Are you sure? I thought I read that the 6.4 twins were fixed...???

Here is another one:

Where does the exhaust gas that spins the turbo go once it has spun up the turbo both under load and under no load? And how is this regulated?

I believe this component is called the waste gate....?? If this is correct, is the waste gate controlled at all by a throttle plate (or similar) that opens and closes as necessary?

D,

D,
a wastegate is a vacuum operatred mechanism that opens and closes based boost. when the boost reaches a certain PSI it opens to bleed of any excess. the exhaust gas passes through the turbo on the same path no matter what the truck is doing.

Boost a load dependant. Supercharged rigs do not build boost either at idle.

D,
6.4L has not wastegate.

The exhaust gases go to the same place. The vanes just vary how much spin is put into the HP turbo.

The exhaust gases go from the HP turbo to the LP turbo. Then they go to the downpipe and the DOC/DPF.
