09 6.4 f550 turns off after idling for apx.5 min.B4 it turns off truck gives you warning I believe 30sec.My question is ,is their away around this.Truck is equiped w/pto.but i would rather not keep it in pto just to keep the eng.running.At times i will let my truck idle for a period of time to power a computor, spot light, flashing lights,i have installed lights in tool bins, and outside working light. At the moment i am puttng my foot on the brk.pedal to reset the timer. That is when im in the truck, but often i come back to a truck thst is not running. Any help would be apreciated thanks
Check with your dealer, i think there is a way for them to program it to override the timer.

Gotta love Kalifornia...but you must as you chose to live there. I would think that Ford would have added a supplement in the owners manual if this was mandatory CA equipment. have you checked the owners manual?

My dad works for a major city in Southern California. Drives a F550 to do his job, and because it's older it doesn't have the flash, but he was warned when this law went into effect that he can't let the truck idle. Given the nature of his work, I think he either might have an exemption OR maybe if he used PTO, then it's OK??
I never really understood PTO, honestly....?
BTW - the police don't actually come looking for you to idle. You're reported by nosey people!
since you are in California, you need to get a jar of vaseline...........

Maybe this will explain it - see the second part here for "Engine Idle Shutdown ...63T":
FEDERAL 49 STATE EMISSIONS SYSTEM
Forced on 6.4L diesel without 63T Engine Idle Shutdown
or 63E Engine Idle Shutdown Exemption
50 STATE EMISSIONS SYSTEM .......................................... 425
Standard on all gas engine units. Forced on 6.4L diesel
with 63T Engine Idle Shutdown or 63E Engine Idle
Shutdown Exemption.
ENGINE IDLE SHUTDOWN .................................................. 63T
Required on 6.4L Diesel with Automatic Transmission in
the following states: CA, CT, DE, GA, ME, NJ, NY, NC,
PA. Optional on 6.4L Diesel with Automatic Transmission
in all other states. Not available with Manual
Transmission, 76R Reverse Vehicle Aid Sensor, or
Navigation Radio. Can be deleted for vehicles ordered by
dealers in CA, CT, DE, GA, ME, NJ, NY, NC, and PA for
delivery outside of those states. California and affected
green states require non-exempted vehicles with diesel
engines rated over 14K GVW to incorporate an idle
shutdown system to prevent extended engine idle
periods. After a predetermined period, the engine PCM
automatically shuts down the engine and triggers the
accessory module to shutdown power to the accessories
to minimize battery drain.
ENGINE IDLE SHUTDOWN EXEMPTION ............................ 63E
Optional on 6.4L Diesel. Vehicles exempt nationwide
from requiring the Idle Engine Shutdown System include
buses, recreational vehicles, emergency vehicles and
military tactical vehicles. Requires certification that the
state exemption requirements are met.
IDLE ENGINE SHUTDOWN NOT REQUIRED ..................... 633
Optional on 6.4L Diesel. Vehicles that do not qualify for
63E exemption and are not intended for registration in
CA, CT, DE, GA, ME, NJ, NY, NC, or PA are not
required to be equipped with idle engine shutdown.
Dealers in affected states can select this code if the
vehicle is not intended for registration in CA, CT, DE,
GA, ME, NJ, NY, NC, or PA or if the vehicle qualifies for
any state-specific exemptions from California Emissions
requirements in CT, DE, GA, ME, NJ, NY, NC or PA.

Well the post above this problem just fixed your problem. Go buy a manual transmission and it will not turn off! I know how hard it is to go from an automatic back to a manual...you can not talk on the cell phone, drink your coffee, eat your sandwich and change the radio station while driving through town, but I think it is possible
Simple solution: Run your PTO.
Another solution: Install a switch in line to the PTO to open the circuit. When you throw the upfitter switch for the PTO the truck goes into SEIC but the PTO dosen't engage. There is no "flash" the dealer can do to make it all better. Trucks come from the factory with this program and that is determined by how they are ordered (ambulance, police, off road, military). Volk73- make sure you are doing the maintance as per the engine hours if you idle the truck for more than 10 min every hour. That puts it in the "severe duty service" catagory. Engine oil and filter changes need to be done every 5,000 miles or 200 hours, which ever comes first. 1 hour of engine idling equals 33 miles.
