I am considering buying a new truck, which will be my first diesel. Crunching the numbers, the new F450 has a weight of over 14k, has anyone else noticed, or am I looking at the right weights.
refering to the fact that new truck will be for *work* *cough*
welcome to the diesel stop. it will have a gross vehicle weight of 14k i think its going to be around 1.5k more than the current 350 dually empty, acording to its weight and gvwr you are better off buying a commercial f450 or 550 and sending it to the upfitter as you will have more payload in the end because of the ratings

Not to concerned with the higher payload. As a f350 would do fine for what I need. (tow 5th wheel to job sites).
More concerned with tax implications. The Ford truks, f150-f350 are over the 6000lb mark. The new f450 is over 14k? just want to make sure I am looking at the right number there. Over 14k weight puts this vehicle into another category for people who use the trucks for work, but don't necessarily need a (work truck) as they drive them home and do other (work) related tasks where you wouldn't need a truck without a special set up.
I think you may be confusing the curb weight of the truck with the GWR or the weight fully loaded with payload. The 14K refers to the masximum possible loaded weight. The payload I think is around 6000 lbs. so that would put the truck weight at around 8000 lbs. Is this right folks?

I believe that the new F450 crew cab dually will weigh in at about 8500-8600lbs. with fuel. My truck is over 8000lbs empty. I believe the GVWR on the F450 is 14,500lbs... which is what you get taxed on. $200 a year to reg my 13,000lb. GVWR truck in MA.
Cab chassis F450's, and pickup F450's while similar, are going to weigh different weights. I take it the original post here is relating to the F450 pickup, but these posts never seem to specify which version is in question. LS

Good point.. Mine was a chassis cab outfited with the Western Hauler bed... Honestly I thought all 450/550's were chassis cab and had to be sent to an upfitter for a bed etc.. because the 450/550 frame being longer, a standard dually bed won't fit??

Until this year, you were correct. Ford will be introducing the new 2008 F-450 Pickup shortly which is 4" shorter to accomodate the F-350 bed. Here is the Media Ford News Release about the new truck.
Also, is the 14500, the number for GVWR that is what you would use when writing off for tax purposes? Not to conncerned at the moment of the actual weight, just whether its 50% or 100% hehe.

You mean pick up? They are both trucks. Not trying to be rude, but unless you specify pick up, or cab/chassis, most people will assume the one they are familiar with. My c/c F450 has the 16,000 GVW. The Pick up F450 has the 14,500 GVW. LS
