Went to school for the 6.4

my dealership just sent me to class for the new 6.4 motor and wow, this truck and motor should put ford back on top of the diesel truck world. everything that we have had problems with on the 6.0 has been solved. there should virtually be no problems with the 6.4 compared to the 6.0. most of their problems apparently have been due to calibration issuse. the engine is soooo quiet. kind of like a duramax.
im kind of worried about working on them. if you buy one be prepared for the cab to be removed once or twice in its life time. except injectors almost any other major repair is going to require cab removal to work on properly. but if all goes as it seems this engine should out last the 7.3

Have you heard the one about counting your chickens before they hatch? Saying that the 6.4 will outlast the 7.3 is in that catagory. We'll just have to wait and see. Do you still have to crawl under to change out the fuel filter? The cost for the new filters on the 6.0 and I assume the same for the new 6.4 are rediculous.

You can pay a lot less by buying them just about anywhere but the Ford dealer. I mean the exact same Racor filters, not will-fit filters. They're still pretty pricey, but until Ford gets real on their filter prices I will never buy one there, which also rules out *ever* having them do a filter change for me, since I'd have to pay that ridiculous price.

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

THE FUEL FILTERS ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL IN THERE PLACEMENT. THE SECONDARY FUEL FILTER IS BIGGER THAN THE 6.0. OH AND THE HFCM NOW HAS A WATER DRAIN VALVE INSTEAD OF THE 6MM ALLEN PLUG

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

I KNOW THAT SAYING THE 6.4 WILL OUTLAST A 7.3 IS A STRETCH BUT THE SHORT BLOCK OF THE 6.0 WAS A PRETTY GOOD BLOCK. THE 6.4 IS NOT AN IDENTICAL BLOCK ANYWAY, VERY SIMILAR BUT HAS DIFFERENT CASTING.

Take it easy Pappy, he said, "but if all goes as it seems this engine should out last the 7.3".

We shall see how it does.

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

One question where is the HFCM drain now?? do you still need to crawl under the @#$#@@ truck to drain it? Or is it under the hood now where the 1984 chevy Silverado's were? That is the one thing I hate about my 05!!

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

Well the drain lever is at least a start! I know from the few pics I have seen of the new motor it would have been hard to have a good place to drain it up top,but it would have been nice. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

I went today too, should be interesting. These farmers are in for a shock around these parts, the days of halfazzed maintainance are over. Still a bunch of what ifs but I have a good feeling about this one. Get ready to pull the cab for anydamn little thing though, forget the aftermarket stuff as well unless your ready for warranty to go by by.

That quote brings back memories. Seems we have heard that line before. Anybody verify this on the new trucks?

Re: Went to school for the 6.4

Gee, all you shade tree's out there better get a winch installed in the roof of your garage to pull the cab when you want to do some engine work. Now that's a real improvement.
