No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
new (1-1-2007 production effective date) diesel road vehicle emissions regs require an extremely low NOx and particulate (soot) level from exhaust.
To do this a filter is used in exhaust called a Diesel Paticulate Filter (DPF). Catalysts are also used to clean up some of the other targeted components in exhaust gases.
This filter is in exhaust system under truck like a catalytic converter but it catches soot and when backpressure builds in exhaust, the engine computer will modify settings of diesel injection and burn this DPF clean by use of elevated exh temps and some diesel injection into cylinder that flows out with exhaust. This process of cleaning DPF is the regeneration (Regen) that is so widely discussed here.

you stayed at a holiday inn express last night didn't you?? LOL
thanks, I was only partialy getting what it was, this did the trick.
i have a question to add if anyone knows, how long does one of these thing last typically?/ i heard they cause losss of power and there is also a little add-in paper in my manual telling me it will do this, but nothing says how long it may take??
They tout a 120-150K life before it needs to be exhanged. I'm not sure anyone knows for sure right now.
There is ash left behind after the regen process and eventually the back pressure will not return to an acceptable level and then it is replacement time.

i think he meant duration instead of dpf service life... but good to know too. you should plan on 20 minutes or so (thats what the guys around me have been reporting) there are a lot of hills here and so they get one about every 350-400miles so every tank. lots of stop and go. my friend just bought a new 6.4 for a service truck has little over 1000 on it had 2 regens one around 400ish and drove alot of freeway(slc to stgeorge and back) 2nd one was 500+miles he lost count, he forgot i wanted him to keep me in the loop

i am sorry, i think you both got me wrong, what i meant was how long does the regen itself last?? their is a loss of power when this happens, for how long?? that would suck badly on a step grade with a load and loss of power.
something else about this regen crap, its supposed to have less effect on the environment?? maybe when the truck is running not in regen mode, then regen comes and just burns all the crap (soot) out at once??

Yes it burns the soot out all at once but, there is a soot trap that does not allow the soot to enter the atmosphere. This will need replaced once full, supposedly at 120k miles.
6SPD, I towed my 12K 5th on a 1100 mile trip and I am sure it went through at least one regen, but I did not even notice. And I was towing in some hills in the Ozarks.
Exactly what jhughd said. I was towing with mine during a regen and was never in any problem power wise. During a regen the motor gets detuned to 325hp, which is still plenty for any application. Then after 10 or so minutes you are back to normal. A regen during highway speeds always go faster for me (<10 min) but at idle or slow city driving it can go over 20 min.
