The gentleman I talked to in Sturgis is a Ford engineer. He knew his stuff as him & I talked for an hour on both the 6.0L and the new 6.4L. I too, have a pretty good idea of what end of the wrench to grab. I am passing on what he told me. He did state that you have to sacrifice somethng to make power. Now I would think there will be after market companies coming up with devices that will boost power and fuel economy. I am not trying to start a war, or anything like that. I will e-mail the gentleman back at Ford and reconfirm this with him. Thanks.

Well i guess its time to chime in somewhat.
First the engineer is wrong on the fuel mileage, not sure what he was doing to get those numbers. Only thing i can say is he must have been in a hot tune or something. I have been working on the launch, and have talked to some of the guys running these trucks 600+ miles daily.
The mileage has been around what we are getting now.
Once the truck is shown in Texas i will talk more about what is different on the new truck.

I spoke to a IH service foreman today, i asked him about the 6.4, now on the IH side they are setting the hp at 300. He also said with everying thing he has had to learn about it, he said that he feels that this motor will be as dependible as the 7.3 were.
[/ QUOTE ]
Now that's saying a mouthful. It will take a few years to determine if that statement is true. The fact that the turbo'd 7.3 was a proven engine from 1994 until 2003, vs a 6.0 that was crap until 2005, means that the incidence of a crap 6.4 engine or electronics, computer, whatever, will need to be nill or less, in order to get some of us old PSD'ers and potential converts to go back to Furd. I, for one, am keeping my 7.3 for a while longer, and will wait and see. I talked to a large truck salesman in Phoenix the other day and he said my 7.3 is worth more now than ever as a used diesel. He says that a 7.3 as a trade in doesn't last a week on the lot and they automatically add $1500 to the price and get it no problem.
I've said it before, that IMHO if Ford doesn't REALLY have their Chit together on this 6.4, they will be in BIG trouble with the light and medium duty truck buyers. I hope they know this and do whatever it takes to make the 6.4 a bodatious, reliable, and powerful rig. 300hp isn't going to cut the mustard.
I also know that Ford's contract with International ends in 2010, and if International dumps another bust with the 6.4, then Ford will have to go with the Cummins engine or they will truly sink. So for International, it's also a swan song if they don't get their 6.4 right. It should be an interesting next 2 years or so, but I'm sure liking my 7.3 more and more.

I am 98% convinced that this drivetrain will set a new standard for the heavy pickup market. Ford knows the score on this one and is working doubly hard to hit a home run.
I think the new Super Duty will be a fine pickup overall.

Man, I hope you're right. I thought they had that attitude with the last one and see where that got me! But you're right, if they repeat that experience, they're toast, so they simply can't allow it.

I am highly skeptical that you will get anything in writing from (truly) a Ford Engineer. It all has to do with that Confidentiality Cluase in his Work Agreement...
At the very least, I wouldn't do it. My job is just not worth anyone knowing 2 or 3 weeks ahead of the General Public...

I actually thought the exact same thing about the 6.0. I can remember reading about it's power and features and thought to myself, man Ford has got one hell of a diesel engine here. I bought one. Worst mistake of my vehicle buying life. Hope the 6.4 is different, really do.

Why does Ford "have to go with Cummins"?
There's others out there who can build a diesel engine, too. I bet no one in their right back in the late 90's knew Isuzu would build the next diesel for GM.
For all you know it could be Renault, Perkins, CAT, Detroit, Mann, Sisu or John Deere.
And Most likely it will be IH again for better or worst.

I agree here. Unfortunately, a poor mill can spoil the rest, though. I think the Oval will build an exceptional pickup, as always, but to think that there will not be some issues with the truck, or engine, is stupid. Unfortunately, the first problems with the 6.4L to appear on this board, or any forum for that matter, will send a wave of strife across the nation and unleashing of a multitude of comments like "I told you so" and "You heard it here first", etc... Like it was said before, most people report the problems they are having with anything before they even think about announcing their good experiences. The 6.4L will be no exception. I, for one, am waiting with baited breath to see the 2008's, allthough I am not so sure I'd jump in the ring right away. I am lucky to drive a company vehicle, and although I could pass the problems with a new 6.4L off as "the companies problem", we are super small and I will be the one heading to the service bay each time and driving the smelly cigarette smoke infested Taurus loanern while the rig is in the shop. I will be in the market in February, again, and am not sure if I'll go 2008. In fact, I stopped at the dealer last night just to let him know that a month before they stop taking orders for the 2007's, he should let me know in case I want to order a last 6.0L. After hearing several weeks ago that the 6.4L is still having problems (from a friends who tests Strokes at the Melrose, IL plant), another 6.0L may be in order while they work the bugs out. What bothers me most is that the problems he reported are not just injectors, or just turbos, but spotty malfunctions across the board. Things you can't just narrow down to one item and fix. We'll see soon enough. I need to experience it first hand before I'll put faith in the comments. I never asked if that was with one engine, or all they were testing, so I'll refrain from drawing a judgement, yet. I'm sure one look at the real new rig, followed by one simple test drive, and I'll be hooked like a few thousand others. Come on 28th! Smoke.

A buddy of mine who is a truck salesman for Ford here locally, is going to Dallas for the debut. He is saying that he has confirmation that the numbers are 350hp, 650trq. He is bringing me pics so hopefully I can post them as soon as he gets back.

I hope that they get those numbers. That would be sweet. Though coming out with a new engine already doesn't look very good for Ford. Can anybody tell me what the 6.0s got for mileage. I know what the 7.3's get. I would hoe that the 6.4 will get just as good and better unloaded and hopefully the same loaded. I'm hoping for high torque.
From my personal experience, having owned 2 6.0s and 2 7.3s, they get about the same fuel economy. That's for unloaded driving. All of the PSDs I've owned have gotten 18-19 MPG on the highway (hand calculated) if RPM are kept below 2k.
