I change mine at 5,000 miles. The first change was done at 3,500 miles. I used AMSOIL, but then went with Motorcraft 15W-40 conventional. I can get it in WI for $12.98 per 5 quart jug...so with filter it comes to $54 per oil change. I do not use the book's recommendation to change after more miles, even though over 75% of miles are highway. Because of how much fuel enters the oil (about 1 qt per 5,000 miles), I can not see that being good for the engine.
When do you change your oil? My book says 10K but that seems to be alot. I was thinking 5K. Thanks!
Use science, not old trucker's tales.
If you're truly worried that the engineers that designed the engine don't know squat about what they do for a living, take an OA at 5k. If that's good go to the recommended interval in the owner's manual. Then take another OA to see where the oil's at then. If you use bypass filtration & a good synthetic, you could get 20k out of it, but make sure you use an OA to tell you when the additives are done.
Oil is no longer "cheap insurance". Yes you need to maintain the truck, but why waste money when you don't have to?

I change mine at 4K because I see dusty conditions. Also, because of a diesel's nature, they run dirty. The only way to get the crud out is to change the oil. I did the same with my 6.0, and Blackstone said I was showing noticeable oil shear, but it was still OK. Well, OK isn't good enough for me- besides, my 6.4 makes the oil dirtier faster than my 6.0 did. No, it's no longer cheap insurance, but it's cheaper than premature engine failure, and I don't care WHAT the engineers say, 10K is way too long an interval for an oil change especially if you run conventional oil. If you run that long, I'd take it to the dealer and document each oil change completely.

I changed mine at 5k and 15k but I used it for freeway and highway only, no trailer. Now I have a trailer and will tow up to 25k behind the 450 so my interval will drop to 5k. I have yet to add oil between changes and stays right at the "full" mark. I'll probably add bypass filter because I'll probably be making more soot at the new higher power levels required by the trailer and load.
Thing is, it's not a science. You paid good money to Ford for the research and development of your truck. They know your vehicle very well, and wouldn't give you a bum steer on maintenance intervals. 6 months or 10k miles. Stick to the manual and you're golden.
I do mine every 5,000, but then again...my salesman screwed up when I bought my truck and gave me a card for oil changes for the life of my truck for $49.99. The lady in the service department had a meltdown first time I went in to get my oil changed. She tried to fight me on it, so I got the Service manager. He told her "nothing we can do, the salesman screwed up." So I dont mind changing it every 5000.
When I had my transmission serviced...they gave me a $10.00 off coupon, so next time I got my oil changed it was only $39.99. LOL

Our Ford dealer here in town is up to $95.00. Service mgr says no more coupons.......

Sometimes I'll idle it for a while and I believe that will screw up the oil via fuel in it from cylinder walls. Some guys here are complaining of high fuel in the oil.
Il'll change it every 5K or less to be sure I'm not towing with dilluted oil.

I was thinking about doing mine every 7,500 miles. I tow 11,000 lbs once a month during the summer and it's normally 1000 miles or so but the rest of the time it's 21 miles to and from work with a good mix of city/hwy. Do you guys think I fall in the category of normal service or severe service?
Thanks,
Gerry

Personally, the dealer told me on mine that every 6,000 and no earlier. I could get away with up to every 8,000 if I wanted to. That of course is using their oil and filters. Now that an Oil Change is nearly 100.00 I am considering going to AmsOil but, want to get some facts about just how often I have to change my oil with it.

You can get 15 quarts of Motorcraft 15w40 at Walmart for under $35. Pick up a Motorcraft oil filter from dieselfiltersonline.com for under $20. $55 or so later ($60 max) plus some time and you have yourself an oil change.
Seriously.... in all honesty.... you're going to get different answers from different people. Some people will swear that the way they've been doing it for their entire life works just fine for them. These are the same people that'll tell you that they know how to maintain their truck better than Ford does. I am a firm believer in adhering to what's stated in the manual--and nowhere in the manual does it state that you can vary the maintenance interval on oil changes depending on which type you use.
