Well I don't really want to talk about this bit here we go.
Yesterday while pulling 7,000 # flat bed my truck gave a
2-3 second stream of white smoke while accelerating from
30 to 40 MPH. It also has black soot in tail pipe and I can
see brief puffs of black smoke on hard accelerating.
Motor now does not feel quite right. I have the newest flash.
If this were my 6.0 I'd be guessing that it was a Turbo
or EGR related problem since I had experienced those
symptoms more than once.
The 2 techs (different dealers) say they have not had to
work on any 6.4 motors yet. Man I hate having to be 1st
in shop. One tech might say to other tech "where do you
want to start".
Any suggestions or ideas?

I saw some smoke this morning during the start of regen #2 at 400 miles, I watched a few cars scatter so it must be stinky. The smoke stopped within a few seconds and wasn't much to look at, just a small cloud of bluish/white. Kinda reminded me of an old gasser running on a contaminated gas/Diesel mix.
On a side note, I noticed no more than 20 lb. of boost was available during regen but the whole process seemed to take about 5 minutes and normal boost was available again. Damn, I love this thing!
Yeah they don't issue those things unless they have a number of units showing up with the same problem. Looks pretty detailed and very technical. The scary part is that apparently they are getting reports of units with fuel oil dillution. Jay does this mean injector problems or fuel leaking?

Both the Dodge CTD and the Duramax have had probs with fuel dilution from leaking HPCR injectors (same Bosch style injectors as the Ford 6.4). Dodge recently issued a TSB requiring 7 vs 10 micron fuel filter.
Seems the new generation of injectors are super sensitive to any contamination in the fuel.

In theory, practice and theory are the same.
In practice, they are not.

Are we to the point that we have to check every "filling station" for the ultimate in fuel quality and filtering less we suffer an engine failure and the potential for a warranty claim denial for poor fuel quality..........I hope not.............Jeese if we get to the point that diesel at the pump meets the standards of Jet A fuel, where is the price point going..........this is potentially going to effect all diesel fuelled vehicles...... mine is puffing black smoke everytime i excelerate truck runs great, took it to Ford on monday rep did a inspection informed me that ford is working on a new flash wont be ready for a month already had frist flash

I have a light coat of black soot in my exhaust on the F450. Does anyone else have this besides myself and MBULL? I have about 5200 miles on it.
Thanks,
Marc

I am not sure that a light coat on the pipe is a concern. My gasoline vehicles after awhile look like this and I'm pretty certain DPF or not that the 07 Diesels will still be at best comparable to a gas engine in tailpipe emmissions thus the same in pipe cleanliness. Lot's of other factors depending on driving condition come into play. Don't think I would personally worry about it unless engine isn't running right.
Also, note what Diesel Jay had to say in my thread and in this thread above about TSB 07-8-9. If you learn more about this issue, let me know. I remember seeing a video from Ford where a guy was wiping the inside of the tail pipe tips with a white handkerchief showing that there was no soot deposition. My pipes were clean to around 2,000 miles and would have passed the handkerchief test but no more. Truck seems to be running great but my fuel economy wreaks or sucks if you will. I'm not sure if this soot buildup is a good thing for these "Ford Clean Diesel Technology" trucks. I'm waiting for someone I trust to tell me different.

My understanding of the theory is that you can't say "DPF or not..." and compare it to a gas engine. The entire *point* of the DPF is to not let soot go out the tailpipe. We're not talking emissions, just soot. Every International "Green Diesel" demo ever had the guy with the white hankie on the end of the tailpipe as they rev the engine. The Ford sales/tech info files all show that picture of the squeaky clean tailpipe compared to the nasty old one.
I just don't understand where the soot could be coming from, unless the DPFs are failing. It's that simple. There should be nothing that could happen in the engine that would result in soot at the tailpipe, because of the DPF. And there's nothing donstream of the DPF that could generate soot. I can only imagine the EPA eventually being interested in this...

I wonder how good the new diesel fuel we are buying really is. Is it clean enough to run through the new fuel system. Are we soon at a point where we will need a test kit to check quality and cleanliness of the fuel we are pumping into these trucks. I know I avoid the small stations selling diesel sort of on the sideline. I just do not trust distributers added the lubricity packages that is suppose to be there in place of the former ingredients. More than ever, I am diligent to add a product like Power Service and change the fuel filters often.
