Tiny update. Today I pulled away from a customers, and the truck went into regen for about 4 seconds, got the message on the dash, and then it was over! No white smoke, but I had mentioned in my last post that I didn't think my truck regenned anymore.
I posted about this quite awhile ago as well, got little response. Perhaps there are two different problems with similar symptoms?
I was reading through the PC/ED manual, and seen that the IDS can put the truck into a manual regen. I might take mine into the dealer and do that just to see what the heck happens.
From what I'm understanding, people are having this problem whether they feel the truck is going into regen or not????
I have my camera sitting on the dash, so next time I hope to snap some pics. People who haven't seen this have no idea how much smoke this puts out!!!
Why is Ford refusing to acknowledge this problem. I've had my truck in no less than 7 times with the same complaint; hesitation, tons of white smoke and feeling likes its missing, and they say no other customer has ever reported this problem. Yea Right!!
Good news. The most recent update seems to have solved the problem for me. Don't know why but just keeping my fingers crossed it holds. Good luck.

What update did you get and when did you get it? I think I've got the latest but I am not sure.

Got update about 2 months ago. Don't know the technical name or code for it but it was supposed to be the most up to date out. It supposedly will put a code on the dash during regen and reset the regen timing and not allow it to regen at idle. Haven't had a regen since so couldn't tell if any of the things are true but no more white smoke. Kinda miss being able to close an entire intersection like James Bond.
I have the latest flash, the TCM killer. Killed my TCM, and my dealer actually pulled a truck in off of the lot and let me have that one so I could drive home. I have had this happen several times after I got that flash.
Ford is acknowledging the problem, they just have no suggestions. I believe there is a TSB or SSM dealing with it that was updated in August. Bascially says stay tuned, we're working on it. I'll see if I can pull it up.
What I'm curious about: Does this happen with the original flash? I have a job 1 truck. Maybe I need to see if I can roll back to the as built PCM data.
It has happened on my truck since day 1 and two flashes later. Doesn't matter if it is cold, hot, dry or damp it does it. It is very unnerving to have your toddler in the back seat , try to merge onto the interstate and only have the acceleration of a Geo metro hitting on two cylinders.

I've had my first regen since the "TCM" killer re-flash and it does indeed seem to kill regen at idle. Since is was going up a LONG and VERY steep hill when I got the message I got no white/blue smoke even though the engine wasn't up to full operating temp. I originally was able to notice a regen by the sound alone but now I can't even tell, it even now gets more than 20 lb. of boost during regen. Good flash, I'm VERY happy, especially with the 1 mpg better fuel economy. '08 F450 Job-1 4.88 gears.
My truck did this last Sunday 11/23 and today my engine light came on.... I had the truck checked out and it said the DPF was full. I have not taken the truck to ford yet... Was wondering if you guys had any insite.
Just got back from the dealer. He gave me a print-out of the SSM that I will quote here:
SSM 20116 2008 F-SUPER DUTY 6.4L - WHITE SMOKE FROM EXHAUST WITH OR WITHOUT A DRIVABILITY COMPLAINT
Some 2008 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.4L Diesel Engine may exhibit excessive white smoke from exhaust with or without a drivability complaint. Concern may be most noticeable when: A) during aftertreatment regeneration initiation when ambient temperatures are below 55F B) in high humidity/damp driving conditions following steady state speed throttle tip-in/tip-out drive cycle. If normal diagnostic procedures do not resolve vehicle concern do not attempt further repairs. Engineering is currently investigating. Monitor OASIS for updates. Effective Date: 08/12/2008

Thanks finchturf for the SSM. My F350 goes in on Monday for the 3rd time for the dealer to work on the problem. The dealership claims they have never heard about this issue, which really surprises me. I'm taking in a printout of the SSM to show them, along with as many references as I can find on the web. I'll post the results if I get any.
This is great guys. Please keep the information coming and post the outcomes. I've dealt with this for 16K miles and I am so ready to have this resolved. The more information I can take to the dealer the better.
Thanks,
Coop

The dealers have (at least they used to) have EDSR - Electronic Dealer Service Reports - this is where the technicians tell Ford they have a problem / issue and this is what did or didn't do to fix it. Ford engineering reviews this within a data management group and determines a course of action - SSM, Hotline, OASIS Broadcast, TSB etc.
My suggestion is tell the dealer to submit one each time they get a No Problem Found. Otherwise, they have to wait for the warranty info (takes too long & is not from the technician's point of view.. )
So my point is each one of you have this issue (Including my truck) and if the information does not get back to Ford via the dealers, Engineering does not know, if they don't know they can't fix it!

I have already been to the dealer once. They reprogrammed the computer. It will do this after running for long periods on the highway. When I step on it, it sometimes stumbles with the engine running rough and bellowing white smoke. If I come off of pedal, it seems to clear up. Getting ready to go back to the dealer once again while still in warrenty.

I too have been to the dealer numerous times only to hear "We cant find any problem." I was told they sent the data to engineering to be analyzed, but never heard back, that was September.
I have one more dealer that I'm going to give a crack at it as soon as I can come up for some air.
