Who's engine ticking went away...

when they added Cetane booster? I realize this hasn't been a solution for everyone, but it's worked for me (knock on wood). If I stop using it, the ticking is back after a few tankfulls...put more in, the ticking goes away after a tankfull or so. Also, what kind of additive do you use? I'm using the additive supplied by Ford.

when you say ticking do you mean pinging? If so then maybe it's because your using fuel with a very low cetane. When you use an additive it's kinda like the same as using premium gas.

read this which I posted in another thread....

Cetane number is a measure of combustion quality for diesel fuel. Also, it refers to the measure of the fuel's ignition delay. Meaning the higher the cetane number the shorter is the ignition delay, the more time the combustion process will take place in your diesel engine.

This is why Ford wants you to use 45C which I have never seen around town. I've notice when I use a cetane booster my engine tends to have less of a diesel knock/ping which in short causes less cylinder wear and/or damage.

It sounds to me like your fuel is "night quite right"
Why are you adding ANYTHING to a new rig with a DPF?

Sounds like a ticking to me, not really a ping. I agree that adding a cetane booster is similar to adding premium fuel.

Three reasons: First, to see if it made the ticking go away...it did. Second (and most importantly) to add lubrication. I don't care what anybody says about the ULSD having equal or better lubrication, I'd rather play it on the safe side. Third, Ford recommends a minimum of 45 cetane diesel. If you know of a place in southcentral PA that sells diesel rated at that, please let me know. Not sure how the DPF has anything to do with this; I use an additive that's approved for use in USLD engines, and have not had an increased number of regens.

I would guess the key may be in your answer, lubrication. Either in the injector or upper cylinders. I also believe that todays fuels are far to dry, but they do burn clean.

ticking

If your fuel is like what we get in canada it has an average cetane number of 40. Ford recomends 45 for the 6.4L. Ford recomends using cetane boost Motocraft or equivalant.
Using the cetane boost on a fuel below 45 cetane number will improve the ignition of the fuel. This according to my service manager will result in Easier starts, quetier running, less white smoke and more complete combustion. This will help the DPF if anything. However there is no real benifit of raising the Cetane above 50.
This is similar to using a minimum octane requirement of Gas in a gas engine.
Also the other benifits of a additives are a bonus.
My service manager says any good, alcohol free additive that is for ULSD is fine. I use Diesel Kleen cause it is easily available (I am sure others are just as good) and it definately makes the truck run better. I have not noticed any milleage gains though.

Where is the information that proves the ULSD to be dry? I'm interested in reading this info. thanks

For those that are reporting the ticking noise, where/what engine plant built your engine? I am just curious, mine is not making the noise, I have 11k miles on the truck, have changed the oil three time, using Rotella 15w-40 each time. My engine was assembled at the Huntsville, Alabama plant. You can find out where your engine was assembled by looking at the sticker on the verticle EGR cooler that is mounted on the left front of the engine.

No tick either

My motor was built in the same place with no tick either.
huuummmm how odd.
After reading some of the other posts though, I might try some additive just to see if MPG's might change.
I think Jason has a point. This might just have more to do with fuel quality than anything else.

Are you guys sure the engine is good and warm? I notice mine will tick when not up to temps.. It takes a long time to get it up to temp being you've got to heat up 14 qts of oil and 1000lbs. of cast iron.. The heads are cast iron as well as the block.

After that it is fine.

It might have something to do with were it was built. Mine says Indiana plant. The ticking sound is when it is warm or hot and the revs are around 2600 to 3000. there have been other posts on this same matter but no fixes that I have seen or read. I am using the diesel kleen also and my own test has proven that I get fewer regens and the truck runs smoother. I dont get the tick at all. I have not seen a fuel mileage improvement but if it regens fewer times then I am saving fuel. My truck now has 10,000 miles.
