Why is the oil so black?

Changed my oil for the second time, the oil comes extremely black!

Why do you think this is? I only had 3K miles on it.

I also noticed that the oil has a different texture. Is this the way CJ4 is suppose to be?

Heck, even when I checked the oil level with fresh oil, it wasn't clear either.

It's just diesels in general. You can change the oil, drive around the block, and your oil won't be clean in appearance. Gassers can have clear oil for a few thousand miles. Don't fear, the lubrication is still happening although the oil is pitch black.

I disagree to a point, all older Diesels used to soot up the oil, yet my beloved 99 7.3 keeps it's oil clean for at least 3k miles. The EGRs on the new ones are to blame for black oil. Go kiss a tree hugger

What about the EGR causes the oil to get so black?

How can Ford say that under normal driving conditions you can go 10K miles between oil changes?

I just can't see going that far given the oil condition. I'm going to send a sample into Blackstone and see what they say.

Because they are probabley introducing twice as Much exhaust back into this 6.4 to try to meet emissions. It has 2 egr coolers so that tells me they probabley are mixing a fair amount of spent exhaust Back into the intake.Just as stated THIS is the reason for the Heavily sooted oil.

My 03 6.0 was still golden colored after 5K, so I don't know what they have done with the 6.4 that has changed that. My former Jetta was black after the round the block check after a change. Different engines different results. Viscosity is what is important, not color, diesel speaking.

Soot is what turns the oil black. 2007 engines run sootier to reduce NOx. Most of the soot gets trapped by the DPF, but some makes it to the oil.

I'm betting it's pilot injection and not EGR that is sooting up your oil. Early Cummins common rails (03 and early 04) have only 2 injection events and the oil stays clean for several thousand miles. Starting with the 04.5 (the 325HP/610TQ) engines, an extra injection event was added and the oil turns black almost as soon as it's poured in. Neither of these Cummins engines have EGR.

I just changed mine this weekend and got 16 qrts. out, this is the second change and I know I didn't over fill it the last time. That means I got at least a quart of fuel in the oil, and it sure smelled like diesel.

I use the fs-2500 bypass oil filter and the oil still has a slight honey color and actually still feels like oil after just over 6,000. Before putting the bypass filter on the oil was as black as can be with the feel and look of black water. I could not recommend a product more.

Good to hear. I just now finished installing my FS2500. I left the original oil in and it is black. I want to see if the filter cleans out enough soot to change the color back.

forgot to add one thing that my cause it to get black early, this morning we had a 6.4 leave the park,he had issue's,my son called on the two way and said dad, look at this truck comming up the drive,he had a cloud of blue smoke behind him and when he got to the office he stopped for his wife to turn in the car pass, his tail pipe was black, most of the 6.4's we see here are clean inside, and when he started out to go a big cloud of blue smoke came out, enough to make my eye's burn,it was diesel, not oil, smelled like our old 478 GM V6 diesel in our uniharvester did back in Illinois when we started it @ 20 degree's above 0 to go shell corn before the motor warmed up,in this case we are in florida and the temp here was like 78 degree's,my 7.3 never does that.I'm thinking he has a dripping/leaking injector/injestor's.

(Excuse my childlike grammar, I’m a high perforamce marine diesel engineer not an english major)

What causes the oil to become black is "blow-by" The formation of soot passing by the piston rings into the crankcase. The soot mixes with the oil and the result is black oil. After time it may appear even blacker because when the engine oil is changed some of the dirty oil remains in the sump and other areas then mixes with your new oil making it appear black even after a few miles. This may get worst after time.

Now, on todays more high tech engines like the 6.4 common rail there should be less soot because of the extreme pressure the fuel is delivered into the combustion chambers. The high pressure causes the fuel to "mist" when delivered which allows all of the fuel to burn, unlike the old mechanical fuel systems when the fuel was delivered as a spray, and the result was incompletely burned fuel (soot). There’s a lot more to it but that’s the gist of it and it’s time to eat.

That’s all I got to say bout that.....

...............blow by on a new truck, all motor's have some blowby and they have more as they age,but a 2008 should not have that much blowby to cause the oil to turn black that quick,my 5 year old 7.3 with 66,000 mile's is amber to brown in color at my 5000 mile change and one of the above post's stated his oil smelled like diesel, the guy that left the park yesterday will most likely have oil that smell's like diesel also=== issue's,plane and simple.
