Why is there oil in the intercooler???

With really loud TUMMMMM and PISSSSSSHHHHHHH blew up the intercooler hose, open the hood and the front passenger side is full of oil, put the hose back checked the oil and drove back home really slow.
turbo pressure was about half way on the gauge dial
Why do I have oil in the Intercooler? Is my intercooler going to get filled with oil? Is this normal? do I have an internal oil leak? Am I going to have to get a gallon of oil to carry with me?

your truck has a crank case ventilation system(most all fords do) that draws the oil into the intake(using the intake to create a vacuum in the crank case). Its fairly common. if you do a search for it you'll find threads on how to stop it

How much oil? A little residue is normal but if it drips or pours out then you have issues. Check the oil level, is it overfull (an inch or more above the MAX mark)? If it's overfull then when was the last time you changed your oil? If it's overfull and you changed your oil less than 10k miles ago then you've got a high pressure fuel leak. If the oil is not overfull then you have a turbo shaft seal that went out. HP turbo's seem to be the most popular to fail.

Same hose blew off mine this past spring when taking my 5er out for the first camping trip.

Pulled off the highway and re-attached and all was well.

There was a residue of oil that sprayed up on the inside of the hood. Not a whole bunch, but enough where I sprayed it off the next day at a quarter car wash.

Have you or anyone used crank case breather filters or additional "in-line" filters on the 6.4L ?

Another question: Is it safe to remove the bottom CAC connector boot to check for oil or water? Once removed, can it be put on without detriment and can the clamp be re-used?
I wish there was a less intrusive way to check for this -- and empty it out if necessary.

yes its safe. ya it can be put back on without issue and yes the clamp is re-usable.

no i haven't done a CCV mod on the 6.4, but i know on "other forums" there has been mention of it. I just don't worry about it.

Doesn't any of this oil get into the combustion chamber?

I had my lower hose tear on a trip and stole one off of a donor truck that was in for "turbo replacement". At least 1/2qt spilled out on the ground when the tech took the hose off! You could eat off of my hose so I don't think there should be any oil in the intercooler. The clamps are re-useable but are stapled to the factory hose. If you pull yours off to check, make sure you tighten/torque them or it will blow off when you least expect it. I carry a spare with clamps now in my trailer.

im sure a minuscule amount does, but considering the sheer amount of **** it has to pass through prior to getting into the engine.
I have a serious doubt about the 1/2 quart of oil pouring out unless the truck in question had 1.5 million miles on it.

There was a good puddle under the truck and shocked the kid that took it off. He was not expecting to wear oil at that moment! You are right, it was a high mileage roach.

If it is in for a turbo it is likely a seal went on the turbo. With two turbos it is not as likely a leak will go out the tail pipe like in the 6.0 or the 7.3 that had the single turbo.

Well I changed the EGR valve on my Ford 2008 F-450 four weeks ago and I still get alot of white smoke could the oil be causing that white smoke?
I searched for ccv mod for the 6.4L engine there not that much info on it, found some on older engines

What does the smoke smell like? Unburned diesel, sweet or burning oil?
