Seabee: Huh? I live in Texas and I have never had an emission test done on a diesel. Is this something new? When did this start and what years are they testing? Is an 08 going to be subject to testing? I live in one of the crap counties that test everything but they have never tested my TDI. Thanks.

Starting 2010 Diesels will get emmisions testing in texas.
I say stick with your perfectly good truck for now and save a ton of cash doing so. I wouldn't buy a new 6.4 unless the current truck you
are driving was totaled in a wreck and you had no other choice. I would wait until after 2010 and see what happens with fords new
engine being created now. The 6.4 will soon be discontinued like the 6.0 so why jump now when most will be jumping again like they did
with the 7.3 and the 6.0 and the 6.4. Soon the 6.4 will be called a diesel sucking turd compared to the newer stuff coming out. That is
what always happens, and newer thing comes out and people swear it is the biggest baddest thing out their and then it is replaced by
a better thing and people jump ship and swear how much better and amazing the new thing is over the once called biggest baddest
thing that now is called a turd. Talk to any respected mechanic and they will tell you the 7.3 was and still is the best diesel engine
ford ever had.
And the flip side is that you can end up perpetually waiting for "the" technology to arrive because it is always arriving on a sliding scale. In 2010 the reason to not buy will be that it is too new and nobody wants to be and "early adopter". In the interim, I would have been living with the smell and noise of the 7.3 for 3 more years.
I've only got 14K on my 6.4 but I've had zero issues. Within the first 15K on my 7.3 I had a water pump and front crankshaft seal replaced. I sometimes think the there is a gulf between the raves for the 7.3's and the reality.

Hell yes! I traded a great 1999 7.3 on a 2003 6.0 and then the 6.0 on my 2008 6.4 and although each truck had something I miss I would still do it again. Each truck put a smile on my face every day despite having a lot of the usual issues because they all were/are early production models do to the fact I can’t wait to get the new ones ASAP.
wish I had a nickle, (ok, a ten dollar bill) for every one of those offers Ive received........when I get one I smile and realize that Ford sees yet another chance to make a buck! I dont think so.

NEVER give up the 7.3 NEVER!!!!!!
My buddy has a 2000 with 800,000 miles that is right now on its way to Canada (4000mi round trip) with 4700# in the back.
7.3's are BETTER that gold, they're indestructible!!!
He also has a 2004 that we just removed the SECOND 6.0 from and pryed in a 7.3!!
I couldn't persuade him to do it right and go with a CUMMINS!!!

Oh, that new truck smell is nice, but a payment book has that foul odor. I just spent a few days of quality time with "old reliable". Polishing compound, some "Ice", interior detail work, and a few new mods. The old girl is standing pretty tall for 6 plus years old and getting close to three fourths of a million miles. I think a new truck will probably be a reality in a few years. I drove a new F350 Lariat, yea it was nice, but when I got back behind the wheel of old reliable, it just seemed like home.

The technology aspect, you can wait forever, if you are waiting to see what comes out next. I.E. My first computer was a Commodore 64. I could have waited for the 128 but would that waiting have been smart. I don't think so. I learned alot off of that little computer. I think the same transfers to all points of life.
Don't buy a new truck due to future technology it's defeatist. The next truck is always going to be different and most likely have some things that are better. If I went by the wait to see what is next, I would still be driving a 1970 1/2 ton, or a 69 3/4 ton, or a 71 Ranchero GT. You just can not put technology advances into the mix when deliberating on a new vehicle. My truck has very few convienance options, A/C and cruise + upfitter switches. I have all the mechanical options. I would sell a 20?? in a heartbeat if it was starting to cause problems if not I would keep it, but don't say it is because you are waiting for new technology. It will be obsolete the day you buy it. Just like computers and video games. J.M.H.O.

i just traded in my 2000, f350, 7.3L, 4x4, lariat, cc, short bed, with 158k miles on it. it was a great truck and nothing mechanical had ever gone wrong with it.
i bought a 2008, job3, f350, 6.4L, 4x4, lariat, cc, long bed, drw, 3.73ls, with all the creature comforts except the moonroof. i just drove it home last night and the ride is unbelieveable.......awesome. i plan on towing a medium sized 5th wheel or travel trailer after i get about 5k miles on it. i'll keep y'all posted on mpg's and any problems that arise........
Interesting thread. I leased a 08' 350 CC last July so I'm closing in on a year into my lease. I fully intended to buy the truck at lease end for $32,000. I'm now considering holding of on purchasing it due to the gas mpg/price concerns. I only bought it to pull my 5th wheel 5-7 times a year which it does marvelously!.
It's tuff to justify a $50,000 truck for 6 trips a year. SO, considering turning it in next year and looking for a used 7.3 Unless Ford comes up with a MPG fix either for the 08's or the new 2010's, I'll be looking used in 12 mos.
It's not the extra $100 a month in fuel costs, it's the extra $500 plus on everything else from the trickle down effect that's killing me.
It's pretty insulting that all the brainiacs at Ford, GM, and Chrysler haven't been able to improve gas mileage in 40 years. If things don't change soon, any American made vehicle will become a collectors item. This problem is much bigger than people complaining about 10 mpg and excessive regen cycles.
From what I've been reading in this forum seems to show that most buy these trucks because they are realy nice trucks and they add lift kits and big tires and chips etc.... They are luxury items meaning they can be done without. Those that own em for necessity won't maintain Ford's marketplace or GM or Chrysler. It'll be interesting when the price per gallon of gas exceeds the price of a share in Ford stock. Be cheaper to own part of the company than drive one of their products.

I think the two things negatively affecting fuel economy have been the customer's thirst for power and all the emissions crap. If engineers could tune the 6.4L the way they wanted to at pre-2003 emissions levels...we'd probably see 20-25 mpg EASY...maybe even closer to 30.
But some people in charge have decided it's better to use more fuel than less.
