The info that should have come from Edge. This is the information that can be monitored with the Insight on the 6.4L Powerstroke (specifically). It took me awhile to put this together..... but I figured someone on here could us it when setting up their Insight!

Are the exhaust gas temp readings the equivalent of a pre-turbo " normal gauge"? Has anybody tested this yet...the EDGE website certainly isn't clear on this point?

I had a pre-turbo EGT probe on my 6.0L...... and the numbers I have seen on the EGT monitor look exactly the same on my 6.4L..... I think the highest I got it was 1159..... climbing a hill with no load... foot in it!

I believe that the factory EGT probes are installed in/near the dpf and are therefore post turbo. I do not know the exact location of the probes but have found that exhaust temp B1S3(see above post) seems to be the most accurate. If you are planning to tune your truck then you probably want something pre-turbo for safety reasons, but for just shut down temps or basic monitoring the factory probes should be adequate.

It makes sense that Ford would want to know temperature at DPF for regen purposes...but I was hoping for a consistent set of responses to my question. I just put a hypertech econ tuner on my truck....and the power increase was pretty noticible..but I did it for economy. I am just trying to protect myself when pulling hard up hills, towing my 16.5k th wheel. Last summer, I did ok..in stock tune....but of course I never knew if I was close to being too hard on the truck. I would like to go with the Insight..to avoid drilling, tapping etc...
If I make a couple of test runs with the stock setting...and note the highest EGT readings...couldn't I use that as a benchmark for towing with the tuner applied?

Jay..... The Insight has an option to add a regular drill and tap EGT probe. The wiring that goes from the insight to the OBDII port has a input on it for a accessory EGT probe that you get from Edge for about another $75. So..... it still is pretty much the best guage system you can buy!
I'll have to lay under the truck and look around for sensors on the exhaust system. I would swear that the temps shown on my insight have to be preturbo..... because they can get into the 1100's if you are pushing the truck (unloaded)...... usually post turbo temps in this same condition are about 900*.

The more I think about this..seems like either one would work...the exhaust gas goes into the turbo and right back out...some heat can get absorbed by the turbo..and of course the exhaust has now traveled another couple of feet. So I would expect a lower reading than pre-turbo...but it should be consistent...ie...200 degree's at high temps.....very litle when idling, etc... That said, I have asked a tech at EDGE to go run a test..since they have an 08 in their fleet and send me the results.

He wasn't sure where the probes were...but was willing to go put one on his truck and drive it around and report the readings. With a different model product , hooked up the same way, he had observed temps in the area of 1300 degrees...so he thought he was getting equivalent to "pre-turbo" readings. By the way, a friend of mine who was a Cummins mechanic for 20 years told me that they always put the probe about 6-12 inches below the turbo outlet..on the exhaust pipe. This was on big rigs.

Looking at the 6.4 Bible, on the right up-pipe it shows a EGRT InletSensor. I am assuming it means EGR Temp. Since it is in the up-pipe, as long as we get the right sensor, it should be fine, right? I am very interested in the answer because I want guages for towing and need to keep the grab ahandle for my wife. Insight would be perfect.

From the edge owners manual....I think you have exhaust gas recirculation.....not sure what that will tell us. I am in midst of clarifying this..will post final answers to the forum. Also...to the 550 owner...the edge should work as long as you have same diagnostic port configuration.
