Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

I recently installed a Cold Air Intake in my truck and I instantlly got an Engine Warning light come on. It went off after a day or so. However, then I started to get puffs of Grey Smoke around town after acceleration. The light then came back on.

I took the Cold Air Intake off and it all went back to normal.

Any Comments? Now im stuck with a 1 week old $400 Cold air intake. It sounded pretty cool installed and added some spunk down low.

I have read your posts on the DP switch but that is not consistent with this problem. Logic tells me that its and air fuel ratio issue and that if i waste/spend another $500 on a programmer maybe this will go away.

My primary reason for installation was for better MPG and for towing my 10,000 pound toy hauler.

I also have cat back by Magnaflow.

Here we go. Don't mean to sound like an ass but modding this truck is asking for trouble.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

I would certainly put the stock air assembly back on. I just do not see any reason for replacing the very good Donaldson air filter assembly. I can only guess that if a turbocharger on one of these 6.4 suffered blade erosion from dirty air, what the replacement cost would be. $400.00 for a aftermarket air filter assembly?

Why would you mod an 08 when they havn't been out long enough to know how or what they will do stock ? Those intake salesmen must be very good at their jobs.It doesn'r surprise me that they have stuff out so that guys can mod an 08.

Live and learn
Hopefully it doesn't cost you to much this time.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

You don't want to know what a replacement turbo assembly is worth. Just estimating my mechanic was throwing the $4,000.00 number out.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

First step would be to try to scan for the codes that set the check engine light, then return the intake to stock to see if it happens again. I'm not sure if these motors have a mass air flow sensor to sense the increased airflow coming in. The 7.3's did not.

I don't think any of the tuners out right now have a compensation for different air intakes.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

Many of these "Cold Air Intakes" I've seen are really hot air intakes that take hot air from under the hood, I just don't understand why anyone would purchase them.

TAKE IT OFF.

I don't have an 08, i have an 05, but the ONLY mod i have done to mine is DieselKleen fuel additive. I would suggest this mod or no mod, but thats just me.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

This is part of a thread from another forum that seems to be similar...

"6.4 PSD Does not like changes

The check engine light came on in my truck so i took it down to have it checked out. Dealer said i had 42 codes regarding the mass air flow and the regen system. Dealer said it was caused by my AFE intake, and my MBRP cat back exhaust i had installed.

My service rep said that the AFE was causing to much air flow, and the resanator i removed on the exhaust was causing the computer to not see enough back pressure. He said mine was one of many he had seen. Anyways, he told me the computer is to sensitive for any changes and to put it back to stock or i would continue to have problems."

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

What he could have told you was,The threshold for DPF backpressure could be reset, and you wouldn't have anymore problems!I had similiar problems.I took it to my MOD friendly dealer, and the tech did a manual regen, and reset the dpf backpressure threshold.Haven't had a problem since!I put over 12,000 miles on now with a Magnaflow exhaust and Airaid intake

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

sounds like the maf sensor is not hooked up right ! either air is getting unregistered of the little gasket that goes between the maf sensor and the new tubing has been not replaced or replaced incorrectly. make sure you go back over the entire install and see if anything is out of place.

Re: Grey Smoke after Cold Air Intake Installed,

Thanks. AFE sent me a new intake and i reinstalled it yesterday. i double checked the install and put it back together again.

After driving it for the day it has started smoking again and now the mpg is 6.4 under light throttle around town. power seems good but its now making a gurgling sound after i let off the throttle, like a rubbing sound.

im going to take it to oc diesel in the morning and see what they say. otherwise im throwing hte air intake in the garbage.
