For the $600 above, you can start looking at all the other remote starter / alarms (VIper, Clifford, etc). I lost the interaction between the door lock pad and the aftermarket alarm when my Viper was installed, but I love the remote start and all the optional turn ons.

I have the Ford Gold as well. It does what it is supposed to do. The only bad thing is that you have to add an extra remote to your key chain. Luckily it is very small and doen't get in the way too much.

Go aftermarket like viper or compustar but make sure your installer has some experience, there are alot of really crappy guys out there. Aftermarket gives you lifetime warranty, more options, a better quality product(ford doesn't make their units), more range, easier access to replacement parts like remotes, and a much bigger list of guys who can troubleshoot issues for you should they come up. Ford may have some decent mechanics but in 12 years as a MECP certified installer I can't say I've seen too many dealer installed starters that were done well.

I believe there's a thread where someone used the key from a 2010 which has the buttons on the key and was able to get it to work with the Ford Alarm. You should look into that.

I installed the Viper 5501 remote start with 2 way remote. Range is awesome. It supposed to be 1 mile with no obstacles (direct line of site), but I easily get 3 or 4 city blocks with tall buildings obstructing my view. The unit including installation was around $600.

The Viper system sets a delay of 15 seconds to allow for glow plugs to warm up. I didn't bother with the Smartstart, because you have to install a GSM based device to talk to the remote and the internet. It costs an additional $399. And, since its cell phone technology, it doesn't work underground in parking garages. Save your money. Yeah its cool, but cool cost dough.

If range is an issue do the Viper with the smartphone app. Range will never be a problem again, if you have cell service.

I've had a Crimestopper on mine since it was new. I think all the remote starters allow for glow plugs if they need to. The only time mine is a problem is when the battery in the remote runs down when the truck is locked.

Ford Gold should come with a five button fob that replaces the factory fob.

Only saw the small single button remote on a 2010 with factory installed RS

Did you lose the door key pad functionality with your viper as mentioned above by a member?
