S&B Intake = Check engine & wrench

Hey guys, I have a job 1 F-250. At 24,000 miles I finally did the new computer flash and after a few hundred miles I did my first modification. I put the S&B intake on and everything was perfect for about 500 miles. Today after lunch I went out and started the truck and I had a wrench in my display and a check engine light. After about 10 seconds at idle the wrench went away but the check engine light remains. The truck runs fine but that wrench thing is kind of scaring me. Is this normal with my intake or not? I went with S&B because I didn't think they were supposed to trigger the light. I don't have a programmer or anything to pull the codes.

It probably has a P0401. Take it to a dealer with the intake installed. Don't take it off and take it in. The tech working on it will run around in circles trying to verify the concern or throw parts on it that it dosen't need.

FWIW, I've never had a problem with my S&B intake. Been running it for almost 50k miles.
Also, you need to have the code read so you can determine if it is even an intake related issue. It could be ANYTHING...

Lightbulb

i would be interested in the code also, from what I have read the P2002 is a good possibility. This is due to the DPF learning the Delta of air flow thru it in the first 3k miles. After that, if you change the air intake you upset the delta and the DPF realizes that more air is flowing thru it. I think if you were to put it on when the truck waqs brand new, it would learn the flow correctly.

Thanks for the response guys. This morning when I went to work the CEL was on (no wrench). When I went to lunch, the light was off and it is off now. I'm curious to what it could be but heck, as long as it's gone I'm not too concerned. If it comes back, take it to the dealer with the intake still on is the recommendation? Thanks again!

Unless you know the dealer real well, DO NOT take it to the dealer with the CAI on. They can void the warranty (don't know if they will, but they can). Job1 trucks are touchy when it comes to the air intake. I've played with two different Afe's and the S&B and it would throw codes on all three. Usually it was the P2002. After a while the light would go off but I could tell truck wasn't running as well (coulda been in my head). When I cleared the code, light would go off and truck would run fine for about another 500 miles then the light would come back on and same thing. Some Job1 trucks are fine, others are not.

I had the same issue with my afe. Except the latest reflash has been good so far. I own a job 1 truck. The kit was good until I took it in for service and then the CEL started happening. Well the latest reflash I now have 3k miles on the afe with no issues whatsoever. A friend of mine bragged about his s&b kit and that it didnt throw codes. Well after the latest reflash he started having issues. Who is laughing now.

The light is off now, I just put 100 miles on it or so and it hasn't come back. The truck seems to run normal, always has.

Off subject but I thought these intakes were supposed to make the turbos louder. The only time I hear it is when I've got my foot almost to the floor with it in 2nd or 3rd gear, and it only sounds like a dog whistle at best.

My aFe intake was throwing the P2002 code every 400 miles and would extinguish after 200 miles. My truck is a Job 2 and I had the reflash [CSP 08B07] done in January 2009. As a result, I did not get the customary CEL after 400 miles. After 800 miles, I re-installed my updated SCT with latest Firmware & Tune Revision, which also allowed for aftermarket CAI selection [a change from the previous software version]. I have had no CEL's with over 1,000 miles since last illumination. Seems like either Ford's reflash or updated SCT software has resolved my issue!

BTW, aFe has a sweet spool up sound similar to a Learjet starting up. I have heard other owners report S&B intakes as being somewhat quieter during spool up in comparison.

i never had the issue like that - my s&b never threw a code - however, i noticed after time that my mileage was worse with the intake than with the stocker, and that my regens were way whacked out compared to how the truck went through a regen and how often it did.

Update: Check engine light still hasn't come back however the wrench has come back twice. It happens on start up and seems to go away after the first 30 seconds of driving or so. The truck appears to run completely normal with the wrench there. Anyway, 30 seconds or so, and it's gone. I just drove to the dunes the weekend and pulled a trailer (about 6000 lbs) 165 miles or so each way. No wrenches.
