Ford says change it the first time at 5 years or 100,000 miles. After the first time, change it every 50,000 miles.

I wouldn't take that to the bank...Ford says the same thing about their little Focus and the rest of their gasoline engines too.

In fact, Ford says a lot of things...Like your rear differential is lubricated for life...or just add 8-10 oz of SCA to the green coolant every 15K miles rather than use a test strip...etc. But as enthusiasts, we know better. We know our diesel engine has special coolant needs, and that there are more robust coolants available than Ford's Gold.

The Gold is a universal, one-size-fits-all hybrid that contains conventional components, like silicate. And therefore, in a diesel, it should be treated like a coolant that contains those conventional components.

3-years/50K miles is a good change interval for any diesel enthusiast using a coolant containing conventional components. There are better, more robust, longer-life heavy duty diesel coolants available. I listed some in my flush procedure.

It's every 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Unless you add one, there's no coolant filter on a stock Ford 7.3L.

Click on the link in my signature for the location of mine (aftermarket).

Thanks Gooch! You are really a wealth of information and I appreciate you helping to make it painless.

For disposal of the old antifreeze, I had two options... one was to go to the state sponsored 'hazardous waste' event (well done and free here in RI). But one of my tractor buddies was looking to 'load' his rear tractor tires. Usually they are loaded with calcium chloride (SALT!). The old stuff tested good for temp, so I also saved some to keep on the barn up north. Always good to have some 'spare' stuff around.

I was able to get Rotella ELC by the case for about $14 a gallon. I sent Shell an email asking about it's use in my 2.2l 'Ecotec' Chevy (dex-cool filled aluminum block) as it seems to be a perfect replacement coolant in a 5 year old car. They replied quickly and it's OK as long as it's well flushed (and not in warranty). So I will flush and fill that with one of the 'spare' gallons (holds 8.6 Q).

Also, the new thermostat I got from the dealer has a gasket built in. I bought a gasket anyway, good thing because the old one leaked like crazy with no thermostat (very dried out).

Sure am glad I found Gooch's post!
