Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

well,...mine started leaking last week....noticed the raw fuel smell and diesel on my front axle....

went to ford and they wanted close to $40 for a "kit"...so i searced around locally and found some 1/2"od x 1/4"id x 1/8" thick orings from a place called filter services in se portland....payed $.30 for both...

on with the tech....

find the tube on the passengers side block......

drain tube

thats the drain tube........hook up a hose long enough to reach a bucket (so it dont just dump fuel right onto the ground and make a mess).....

hose placement

remove the cover that goes over the fuel filter housing (this is a good time to replace the filter).....

filter cover

removed......

cover removed

find the drain valve behind the filter housing and move the yellow lever to the right to drain the fuel from the filter housing.....

yellow lever

lever turned and draining

this is where the bucket and hose comes in handy......

bucket

let it drain completely,...then your ready to pull it apart....heres what i used.....allen style torx bit.....this is a #20 torx.....this seemed alot easier than a bit in a 1/4" drive ratchet,...but use whatever works for you,...its very tight back there.....

#20 torx

once removed,...take the assembly to a clean dry place and remove the old o-rings from the back of the valve.....

removed...

o-ring comparison.....

i used a pick tool to remove the old o-rings......to install the new ones,...just push them into place and they will fit like a glove

o-rings installed

now just put it back together and remove hose and discard of the fuel properly.....

before cranking it up right away,...get in and turn the key and wait for about 60 seconds for the fuel pump to fill the filter housing back up....

done!!

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

yeah, I'm not sure if its age, cold, fuel, or a combination that is causing the o-ring failures. But I put it up there with the cps failure. Its not IF its gonna fail, but WHEN its gonna fail.

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

some more info to add.....

For those that are interested, the "Ford Kit" is the following part numbers:

94-98 F5TZ-9A153-A
98.5-03 F81Z-9A153-AA

The O-rings themselves should be a standard #202 o-ring (on the 94-97 trucks, I dont know on the 99+ trucks). Make sure to get VITON, as some rubber O-rings do NOT get along with diesel or Bio-Diesel.

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

I just odrered a bag of the correct o-rings for this application. The o-rings I ordered are made of Viton which has excellent chemical and oil resistance. Temperature range is -15° to +400° F. Durometer hardness is A75. Meets SAE J200.Other guys have used different kinds of rubber but I understand Viton is suppose to be the best for this application. O-ring size 1/2"OD X 1/4"ID X 1/8" thick. The drian valve at the dealer is about $38(includes o-rings), the o-ring kit (4 o-rings) is about $32. When I ordered the o-rings I have, they came in a large quantity.

I have more than I need if you would like to buy a couple of them P.M. me. ($5.00 a pair)

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

Check out www.oringsusa.com, I have ordered O-rings there before and they have excellent service and pricing. The 202 Viton rings are 50 cents apiece, cheaper (17 cents) if you want large quantities. They ship regular mail quickly.

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

I went to the oringsusa website and they have 3 different types of viton o rings. There is viton 75, 75brown and viton 90. Which one is appropriate for our application?

I was just going to order from them also, but when I went to check out they were going to charge me $10.00 for shipping for 6 small o-rings. How did you get o-rings and shipping for under $5.00 ????

Thanks Ed

Yep, I called them. Just click the option that is for "collect" or something like that. Then in the comment box, write "please send us mail and you have my permission to charge my card the postage". They qouted me roughly $1.80 to cover shipping.
