Is a torx driver and a star driver the same? If they are then Auto Zone has the little tool that some here have been wondering where to get.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Mine sprung a leak. But it wasn't the drain valve, it was the water-in-fuel sensor...that thing right next to the drain valve (the same thing the fuel heater plugs into). It also has two O-rings in contact with the fuel, but they are a different size than the 2-Viton #202's that the drain valve takes. One is smaller and one is thinner. So I had to purchase the F81Z-9C065-AA o-ring kit from Ford (5 O-rings). $36.50.

Then come to find out it was the sensor itself leaking, not the O-rings. Under pressure fuel was passing through the housing of the little sensor itself, via the little spade for the fuel heater plug. Probably extremely rare and almost impossible to differentiate from an O-ring leak diagnosis.

Anyway, if the O-rings don't solve your leak, you might want to check the WIF sensor, and its two O-rings. I would recommending replacing not just the drain valve O-rings, but the WIF O-rings too. Cause sooner or later....

Gooch,
Did you measure the sizes of the O-rings of the F81Z-9C065-AA O-ring Kit. It would be handy to have the actual sizes of as many O-rings as possible just in case.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Sure.

F81Z-9C065-AA O-ring seal kit includes 5 O-rings....

2 each - Fuel Drain - These are Black, coated with a Yellow material.
1/2" OD X 1/4" ID X 1/8" CS

1 each - Water In Fuel Sensor (larger O-ring) - This is Green.
1/2" OD X 5/16" ID X 3/32" CS

1 each - Water in Fuel Sensor (smaller O-ring) - This is Brown.
3/8" OD X 3/16" ID X 3/32" CS

1 each - Fuel Pressure Relief Valve - This is Green.
15/16" OD X 3/4" ID X 3/32" CS

If your little black plastic Water In Fuel Sensor (WIF) is leaking through the spade, it is F81Z-9J294-BA...about $130.00 at $Ford$. For some reason Ford also calls it an external heater. But -AA is the actual heater inside the bowl.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Thanks Gooch,

So Ford actually DOES sell the fuel drain o-rings. Just in a kit with wif sensor and regulator o-rings as well.

I have a suspicion that the yellow coating is teflon. There to make the valve a little easier to turn. I could be wrong, but it makes sense.

You're probably right Kevin. At least that's what I thought the yellow stuff was. It still doesn't justify their price. And I can't say that whatever it is makes the valve any smoother to operate...mine still makes a racket when I move it.

BTW, HERE's a picture of the fuel bowl along with part numbers.

Great data to have on file!! Do you happen to have the sizes of the Vibra-Loc Sleeves and where they are used.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Vibra-lock sleeves are 1/4" for the individual fuel lines to the heads and 5/16" for the main supply line to the filter. I think the return line is also 5/16" or maybe 3/8". I just have a handful of each size.

Gooch, I know what you mean about prices. I'll check Int'l to see what they get for them next time I get by there. Other o-rings I've bought there have generally been under $1 each.

o-ringsusa.com gets 50c each plus 75c each for teflon coating (must be confusing gold for yellow ). I've thought about getting some of those, but haven't gotten around to putting together an o-ring order yet.

Thanks again

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

All:

I changed my O-rings tonight. It was not a 1 hour job...not for an old man with big hands. I found that by removing a couple of connections on the manifold behind and just above the fuel filter housing that I could gain a few precious centimeters of clearance. And, can you believe the number of sharp edges on the back side of the fuel filter housing? My hands feel like they've been in a meat grinder. But....we no leaky now!

Somewhere in here someone mentioned an old diesel trick of adding a little oil to each tank of fuel for extra lube. I've started adding a pint of 2 stroke injector oil to every fill up. Don't know if it'll help keep my seals fresh, but it's worth a try.

Okay, ordered from
http://www.marcorubber.com/orings.htm

if you buy 100 they are .10cents a piece.

below 100 you still are paying 10.00 for whatever # you are buying.

So, I got a 100 coming.

Was wondering if any who ordered a large quantity of Viton O-Rings to meet a minimum would be interested in selling any?

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

I am so tired of replacing O rings on fuel filter valve I now use a different procedure. I went to the dollar store and bought a cheap food baster used in the kitchen. I added a short piece of clear hose on the end and now I evac the filter bowl with the baster. Then replace the filter. Haven't had to replace the O rings since. I had the same leaking problem with my old 6.9 filter also. Maybe Ford or International could solve this problem but then you don't sell parts.

I cut a piece of rubber made a gasket and completely sealed off the drain, use the same method to drain and replace filter.
