Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up
Thanks a lot for the post. My wife has been complaining about the diesel leak and I was trying to convince her that's what diesels do. Trouble is it's getting so people can follow me around by the drip trail. I ordered the kit from Ford thinking that would be easiest but that was probably a waste of money.

the oring site is really good. I especially liked the technical info about the different oring material and their viability at low temperatures. it seems viton, dupont trade name, is iffy at below 15 degrees f.I use to live in fairbanks, alaska, you folks up there might check for drips when it gets down to 40 below, especially if you park outside.

I changed my o-rings today thanks to the great instructions at the beginning of this thread. If I would have had the tool that he used (a #20 torx in the shape of an L), this repair would have taken 30 minutes max. I did not have a #20 like that and had to use a socket which meant removing parts in order to get the socket in there and even then it was time consuming. In hindsight, I should have bought the tool he used as it would have saved me a lot of time. But, I finished the job. Thanks again to this forum as I would have never figured this problem out on my own....

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up
Just did mine last night. HOLY CRAP! I wasn't bargaining for that. The actual mechanical act of taking the valve off and replacing the o-rings was as simple as pie. But getting at the dang thing was a major PITA! It took me about 2 hours (including 2 smoke breaks to let my chest rest from laying on it in the engine bay).
Special note for those of you who need to do this fix: Get a 1/4 drive air ratchet!!!!!! If I had had that, I think I could have done the job in less than an hour. But trying to use one of those little 90* angle T-20 drivers...forget it! I ended up using a manual 1/4" drive ratchet with the T-20 bit, and I had to hold a small pair of pliers in my other hand. Why? because once the bolts were broken loose, they did not provide enough resistance to make the ratchet, ratchet. So I'd turn the bolt a 1/16 of a turn (about all you can get down in there), then squeeze the pliers to hold the socket still while I got a whopping 2 or 3 clicks out of the ratchet...and reapeat..lots of times! And no, I couldn't get my big ol' hands in there to unscrew them with my fingers, nor could I get my hands in there and properly positioned to turn the socket by hand. Just wasn't happening.
But its done now..no leaky leaky, and I won't have to mess with it for another 75k hopefully!
Oh and thanks to "jgarden" for the o-rings. Nice instructions with a pic included to. Nice touch Jack! O-Rings
One sugegstion though Jack, can you put the o-rings in a small back or tape them to the instructions? They were loose in the envelope and when my wife opened it over the trash can, they fell in the trash and she didn't even see them! She asked me why you mailed those instructions to me instead of emailing them. I said, "no..he mailed the o-rings where are they?" Well I could tell that they were in there because the inside of the envelope had clear signs of them being there. I eventually found out where they were!

Glad that this is a sticky.
It seems that there've been a lot of folks having to replace these o-rings this year... don't know if it's more than normal, but seems so. I can't help but think that it might be from the ULSD being out most places now.

Well...ain't this the bomb!! I have been having a diesel smell in my cab for several weeks. Just started to look around and first thing I see is this post. I already have the parts on the way (cost me 10.95) but cheaper than ford. Anyways, thanks all.

I ws thinking the same thing. Until mine started leaking. My truck hasn't had a drop of ULSD in it (unless some station is selling it unmarked). Mine started leaking right after the first real cold snap.

Very odd. The last few nights, we dropped below 38Deg. Now my 7.3L is spewing out diesel from under the front axle. Maybe the Viton 202 o-rings will put a stop to this bleeding.
