Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Thank you very much for the How to on the "O" ring replacements.

I just started my truck after being cold soaked for a week (0 thru 12 below) in the Valley.

Anyway I started my truck and noticed a spill under the front end and looked to see my drain hose leaking at a fast drip, drip, drip, drip. I placed a container under the hose and it slow to a drip,,,,drip,,,,drip. I guess warming up the truck slowed down the drip.

So tonight I look to find this great article on O-ring replacement.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

My truck was leaking fuel like a seive from the top of the fuel seperator where the yellow lever attaches too. You could see it just pour out of the top of the thing when yhe engine was running.. It got so bad I couldn't drive the truck.. And then much to my surprise ! I came upon this sticky.. What a blessing to find such a post ! I went to ford and bought the whole kit.. $60.00 Not to mention I had to rent a car for a couple of days. I installed the the new seperator with a #20 torx bit in one of those "snake" drivers with a cordless drill driver.. It was still a pain in the "Arse" because of the tight area in which to work, especially when getting the peice of tubing connected to the seperator.. All in all it only took me 2 1/2 hours to complete the whole repair including picking everything up,,,

Thanks for a great post..

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

A fuel leak developed on my bosses '01 F250 today. Not knowing what the problem may be, we quick rushed it to a repair shop. We were quoted a new injection pump and labor to the tune of $850-900!
There was diesel in the center engine valley, and dripping down the engine block near the transmission on the ground.

The shop is unable to do anything until Monday, so no money has been spent yet. How can I tell if this is the fuel drain valve leaking?
The truck is not running roughly, but it does leak when the ignition is turned on and the pump kicks on. It seemed to not leak as bad when the truck was warm.

What exactly do I look for?

Thanks,
Scott

Take a look at the very first post in this thread, and click on the photo labeled "lever turned and draining".

You can see the valve very well in that photo and the hose that connects to it (slip fit). Most likely that's where your leak is.

Also, I'd recommend not taking the truck back to that shop. There's no injection pump that pumps fuel in the valley of a 99& up 7.3L. There is the High Pressure Oil Pump, but as the name indicates, it pumps oil, not fuel. At the very least, they need to get their terminology straight. To the readers of this thread.

DO NOT ASK ANYONE TO SELL YOU O-RINGS, OR OFFER TO SELL YOUR EXCESS ONES IN THIS OR ANY OTHER THREAD. Doing so is a violation of TDS rules.

There have been a number of sources posted, and some posters have mentioned buying in large quantities. If you want to buy some of their excess, use PM to contact them. If you have excess to sell, put them in the For Sale section of the site.

Any posts asking or offering to buy will be deleted. Please save myself and the other moderators time by not posting them in the first place.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

You need to look down into the "valley" with the engine running with a flash light.. If it is leaking around the fuel seperator you'll see it leaking.. Also... Go buy one of those mirrors you can extend and adjust so you can see where it is leaking..

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Thanks everyone, will be looking tomorrow. We may just pull it apart and change the o-rings anyway since it seems to be a big problem nowadays.
Worth the time and effort if it stops the leak!

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

Wow! What timing! Mine started dripping last week, after a week of raw diesel smell. I took off the cover and, voila! Seepage at the o-rings!

Looks like I have a tiny bit around the fuel filter seal as well, so I'm gonna do 'em both this week.

Gotta love this place! Thanx, all!

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Do you only need 2 o-rings?

Any updates or modifications to the replacement proceedure?

Thanks
Larry

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Are the o-rings the same for the 01 as the earlier model?

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Our heater element next to the drain valve is the culprit. Now off to the stealer to get an O-ring kit.
There is a bulletin out by Chevron admitting USLD will cause seals to "shrink" as the nw fuel does not have the old "aromatics" in it that help keep seals swelled.
I will be using some additive in my Excursion fuel to try and help the situation.

Will post results of the bosses 2001- F250 later today.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Larry, There are only two o-rings. They will be the same for your '01 and the procedure is still the same. You might re-read the whole post before you start though as there are some good tips in there.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Don't stop at just changing the 2 o-rings on the lever. Change all the ones on the fuel lines leading to the bowl. Only takes a couple more minutes and a couple more $$, but the peice of mind is priceless.
