Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

I am new to this forum. I got 2000 F350 Ford 7.3 Diesel. My truck has been sitting 8 months with full tank of diesel. I was taking for drive and notice a good stream of diesel flowing from 1/4"tubing on the passengers side. Will replcing the "O "rings stop this from happing? Not very much room I can trace it so far then lose it in the rear engine.

smokey, Take a look behind the fuel filter housing at the yellow drain lever, and make sure that is fully closed. If it is, try opening and closing it a few times to hopefully dislodge any crud that might be letting it leak. If none of those two solve it, you'll probably need to replace the o-rings.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Has anyone tried lubricating the 0-rings with anything. In the world of plumbing, I've had luck just lubricating O-rings with plumbers grease or high temperature silicone grease and they stop leaking. Could something like that work with the fuel valve, at least for a while?

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

I'm and over weight older person who also has trouble getting up and into the engine.....
I'm going to try the "O" ring thing and hope it works and stops the leaking.
But it may take a while........laffin
I use a step ladder to reach it all but it's still hard on my belly.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Break the four screws loose with a 1/4 in ratchet with a #20 torx bit. Then remove the bit and insert it into a 10 in piece of vacuum tubing of the appropriate diameter for a snug fit. It then becomes a flexible tool for removing and replacing the screws. When done with the O ring replacement you can tighten the screws with the 1/4 in rachet. Makes the job alot easier.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Thanks ku7 sounds like a good idea.

Duct taping the bit might keep it out of the valley if you do like I and use a bit designed for a screw driver in a socket on a 1/4 inch rachet. Ok, it was all I had. Anyhow the Duct Tape worked.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

I put in regular o-rings from a plumbing shop because I couldn't afford to wait another week to order the Viton type. Do any of you guys have a guess at how long these might last??

What a great idea!! That was what took me the longest was getting those screws out once they were broken loose because the ratchet wouldn't ratchet. Man! Where were you a few weeks ago?!

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

I have not been here in a while but when my dealer called to tell me replacing the entire fuel filter housing was an $800 job I knew I could come here for a better solution.....

I called the advisor back and gave him the F81Z-9A153-AA part number and he said he would check with the tech. He called back a bit later and informed me that he was unaware that there was a kit to repair the leak and that I had just saved myself $500.

Now, I wonder how many others got screwed by their lack of knowledge.

Thanks everyone!
