Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

I knew the drain was seeping, but didn't realize how bad it was until I started digging into the truck to change the glow plugs. The whole top of the engine is covered with diesel. I tried to pick them up locally, but no one had them. I bought a viton oring assorment a couple of months ago from autozone and it had one of the correct orings, but they didn't have a second. I have tons of orings in any size, material and hardess at work so I'll just have to do it next week with the intake and exhaust.

I wish I would have seen this tread last week so I could have grabbed the orings before the weekend!

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Couple of minor additions / hints from the tech who did mine for me this weekend (it was single digit temps and I don't have a decent place to get out of the wind). He loosens the terminal of the GPR so the wire isn't as much in the way and also pops the electrical connector off the sensor (forgot which on, it's right behind the filter / valve) to make a little more room. He also uses a plumbing drain wrench (one of those cheezy adjustable POS's) and an adjustable wrench to pop the fuel filter cover off, in case anyone has one in their toolbox and didn't think of it!

While I was there, I had a chat with the parts counter guys about the PSshop prices and they said they were a couple of (percentage) points above their cost -- they looked up list & cost on various parts I had #'s on. The CPS price made them insist it couldn't be a Ford part! FWIW, the parts manager said he had never sold a valve kit before this fall and now stocks 20+ and sells them daily.

Thanks to all who made this thread possible, it was a great help to get mine done within days of noticeable leakage!

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

I just did mine over lunch today.

The GPR is definitely in the way and loosening the wires coming off the driver's side was a must. I don't know if removing the battery cables is a necessity, but it's my practice when messing with electrical wires, so that's what I did.

The sensor coming off the intake collector was in the way for certain and was temporarily relocated.

All-in-all it took about as long to find the tools, remove the battery cables, re-connect the battery cables, put the tools away and wash up as it did to remove and re-install the o-rings.

Of course, getting the screws started was the single most lengthy part of the install since I left the surgical tubing at the house. Making certain they were properly torqued was the second.

Tape the bit into your 1/4" socket. You can get to the valley if you drop something, but who wants to be bothered.

I will not do this again. I will remove the stock fuel bowl before I have to do o-rings again.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Add me to the list. I got my o-rings a NAPA. Had to buy two packs of o-rings. Each pack comes with a dozen or so o-rings but they only have one of each size. I'm just worrried about the boat now.

I found on the McMaster-Carr website you can buy the individual "L" torx wrench for $1.12 p/n 6959A23 and a 25 pack of o-rings for $5.11 p/n 9464K118

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

I just got the idea that this must be my problem. Is the valve with the o-rings a small part on the back of the separater with 4 small bolts holding it on? I removed the drain hose from the part, removed the 4 bolts and removed the valve. There are two ball valves in the
1-1/2" tall part. I don't see any o-rings. What am I looking for? The pics aren't loading for me so they were no help.
Please help.

Re: seperator o-ring replacement...my first write up

We kept smelling diesel on my wifes PSD, and I looked & found the valley full of fuel. THe only time I come here is when I have a problem, and as always, the dieslestop helped me solve it quickly and cheaply. I found this thread, and then got on the phone to find some o-rings locally. I located some at a hydraulic repair shop just down the road. I changed the orings out in about 30 minutes, and it has stopped leaking. I had to buy 15 o-rings, so now I am stocked up.

THanks allot guys!!!

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

FYI while on vacation in colorado my fuel seperator valve o- rings started bypassing diesel straight to the ground. I was about thirty miles from Golden co at the time with no auto store around. I removed the metal line from the back of the short rubber hose on the valve and plugged the rubber hose with a 5/16 bolt and 2 small hose clamps. I then drove to the ford house in golden with no leakage from the valve. I put the new valve on in the parking lot, not knowing I could have bought just the o-rings, could have save about 28 bucks lol. They charged me 65.00 for the valve. You know on vacation you do what u have to do.

thanks for all the info on these forums, there are alot of knowledgeable people on here.

Re: Fuel Filter/seperator drain o-ring replacement...my first write up

Add me to the list too. I kept smelling the diesel fumes in my cab and also noticed the wet spot on my driveway. Upon further investigation I found the fuel leaking out of my tube on the passenger side and my valley pan was wet too. I am ordering a kebuild kit off of eBay tonight. This site has saved me a ton of $$.
