Plugged EGR cooler on 6.0 2004

Ford is telling me that I have a plugged EGR cooler and oil cooler. My Excursion was running good except in this cold weather, it would smoke and hesitate so I took it in to check it out. 4,500.00 to fix it. I thought that changing the oil Mobil 1, air, and fuel filters and my diesel would keep running well forever. I guess I should have changed the EGR valve sooner.

Changing your EGR valve would not have made a difference. The oil cooler, and downstream of that, the EGR cooler, are plugging up due to coolant contamination/sediment. A good preventative measure is a coolant filter. Is your warranty up? Should be covered under the 5/100k engine warranty.

Thanks Mark for your reply, my warranty has expired, I have 110,000 miles on my diesel. Never heard of a water filter or having plugged water systems on this service. I will get my vehicle back next week.

There are a few sources for them. The below is pretty popular- nice kit that is easy to install:

COOLANT FILTRATION SYSTEMS

2005 6.0 Cleaned my EGR valve about 3 times after being stranded in the middle of the road, (rough idles and then eventually dies, no throttle)
I literally turned my truck off, took the clip off in the back of the egr valve, screwed it out cleaned it with carburetor cleaner and a rag, screwed it in, clipped it on, cranked right up and runs.

Coolant can work it's way back into the cylinders through the failing gasket sealing surface

Also

Could also be EGR cooler. Just had to have mine replaced. It supposedly can leak enough anti-freeze into the cylinder to lock the engine down. Probably needs to be addressed ASAP

I have a 2005 F250 with 107,000 on it. I have pulled my EGR valve out twice now to clean it. After the first time the truck seemed to run better but it didn't last long. I pulled it out again about 1 month later and it was pretty dirty again (not as bad as the first time but still had build up) now the truck bucks all the time and my mileage is down to around 10 MPG. Anyone got any ideas? Is it maybe that the EGR cooler is all plugged up? I don't have any service engine lights coming on or anything like that. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I also have a 2000 F250 with 315,000 on the 7.3 and I have not had 1/10 th of the problems I have had with this 6.0.
Thanks Chuck

The 7.3 has no emissions equipment to and sensors to go bad like the 6.0 does, You have to change the oil more often then a 7.3 as it affects injector performance and longevity. Get a bulletproof EGR Cooler or a block off kit and a tuner that will turn off the EGR feature. Also its a good idea to change your oil cooler since that is probably clogged as well as the same coolant from the oil cooler runs to the EGR cooler (or is it vice versa) either way my 6.0 almost has 300k miles and I change the oil religiously, Use non-silicate coolant made for semis, run a coolant filter, turned off the EGR function so it doesnt suck soot and its runs like a champ. I plan on rerouting the CCV so it doesnt suck oil into the intake either. Most of this I have done myself over time.
