Fuel Filters

16k now on the beast and I know that it is time for fuel filters(according to Ford they should be changed every 15k) Is this something that I can change? Where would I find the filters to purchase and how would I go about changing them. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Fuel Filters

The one on the frame is a PITA.

I changed my first set at 30k and they were fine, still looked clean. I am getting ready to do my 2nd set (65k)

Re: Fuel Filters

I buy my filters at the local auto parts store, usually AutoZone or similar. They now have air filters. They aren't the cheapest prices, but it's faster than ordering online and you save the shipping. So in the end it's not much of a difference.

Changing the frame fuel filter is a joke. I end up with my arm soaked in diesel up to the shoulder, plus some diesel on my asphalt driveway, which softens the asphalt. Blame the idiot Ford engineers (I was one of them 10 yrs ago) on this one. All filters and fluid maintenance items should be accessible under the hood, from above. This is possible to do, no matter what excuse people from Ford want to come up with.

Re: Fuel Filters

I'm getting ready to change mine again. I get my fuel filters at International for about $35. The first time I changed the filters, I got a diesel bath. Last time, though, after reading posts on here, I figured it all out and didn't even spill a drop. I just park the truck with the nose slightly downhill, unscrew the drain valve and drain the filter housing. Then I remove and replace the filter and turn the key on and off a couple of times before firing it up. Yes, the lower filter is a major PITA and could have been located in an easier-to-service location.

Can you post up the Intl. part numbers?

I'm getting hosed by my dealer on ANYTHING I purchase from them.

I think they might have changed the number in their computer systems. I think the number listed here will still lead to the right filter, but I believe the number is 1847170C93 now.

Re: Fuel Filters

I just noticed something on http://www.powerstrokepartsusa.com/category.asp?cat=6 (Googled the part number) that the 1847170C93 part number is listed as the fuel filter kit for the 6.4, but they show the Ford part number (and higher price) for the 6.0.

Bottom line, I finally found an online source for the fuel filter, and it's cheap.

Re: Fuel Filters

With the location of the front driveshaft, I can't drain the frame mounted setup, I just have to eat diesel. The other thing is that the front driveshaft makes it impossible to get any more than about a quarter turn on the ratchet each time so it takes forever to get off while you are laying there in diesel. Why don't they ask the peeps who actually do this stuff instead of an engineer who has never been under a truck in his driveway changing such things!!

Re: Fuel Filters

I just changed mine again.... Get a long extesion and put it through the back by the transfer case to the filter. It will work like a champ The strange thing was today when I did it I had a full tank of fuel and I thought I was in for a bath.Drain the hfcm first and you should have no problems.A little thing I thought of today was when you install the bottom filter back on to the cap put the plastic bag the filter came in back over the filter while trying to position it prior to install this way if you rub drive shaft or anything you will not get shmeg on your new filter

Great idea dmags. It would be my luck, I'd forget it, and button everything up, with to bag still in place.

from a previous post:

[ QUOTE ]
What I do:

With the tank at 1/2 full or less, put rear tires on a 2x8, thus putting the frame in a slight nose down attitude. Take the upper filter off, & out.

Drain the HFCM, by removing the IH drain plug (you do have the IH brass plug, not the factory plug w/ the 6mm hex key, right? - If you don't go get it, its the best $16 you'll spend on the truck). If you reach over the top of the front drive shat, you'll not get more than a drop or two on your fingers. Make sure you catch the fuel for examination. You should get about a quart, if it keeps running, put the plug back in & drive till you get below a 1/2 tank.

Shove some paper towels between the frame rail and the HFCM cap. Using a 36mm socket & 1/2" drive ratchet, remove the cap. (Lots of short strokes, and quite stiff for the 1st half). Filter will be attached to the cap. Remove old filter. This is where you might get some diesel on your fingers, but if you're careful with the paper towels, you won't get any down your arm.

Replace HFCM filter with new filter from IH. Place filter into HFCM and rotate until key in filter engages. Replace old o-ring on cap, and lube new one with a bit of motor oil. Replace cap (lots of short strokes with ratchet). Make sure cap seats fully. No need to reef on the cap, same for the drain plug - the o-ring is the seal. Replace drain plug.

Install top filter. Turn on & wait for pump to stop running, then turn to crank. Should fire right up.

[/ QUOTE ]

You should have no trouble at all removing the drain plug even with the front shaft. When you've broken it loose with the 6mm hex wrench, reach over the top of the driveshaft & pull it out with your fingertips. After it drains, push the paper towels between the frame & the filter housing.

I can now do this change with no more than a few drops on my fingers.

And, I can't say it enough, that IH plug is worth all $16.
