Not sure how much everyone's paying for their filters but I saw AutoZone mentioned here. Our local part stores sell them for almost $60. I found them for half online on C.G.Enterprises. For the price of one filter locally, you can get two filters from them. No shipping charge.
Has anybody ordered from that online store before? Any good/bad experience?
Lou
I can not say I know anything about this online store or the filters they sell. My main concern is you just do not know what you are getting. Unless the filters are made by Racor like OEM ones are, they could be problematic. Filters that are not made by Racor do not have the Aqua-Bloc media on the primary filter.
It is best to stick with suppliers that you know what you are buying.

One thing everbody should remember is the frame rail mounted filter installation. I recently did mine and had a fuel pressure issue. I replaced it and found that under moderate acceleration (1/3-1/2 throttle) I would drop in fuel pressure to roughly 35-40psi. But I could not feel a problem in the way the truck ran.
I talked to Grampy Jim on here and he told me that you must make sure the threads are cleaned and lubed with grease or oil. And to make sure the rubber ring on the fuel pump is lubed to. It is very easy to suck air on this filter unit. For those who do not have a fuel pressure guage you will never know if you are sucking air or losing fuel pressure because the engine will not show signs of fuel starvation until an injector(s) are gone. There is no sign of power loss either.
I was panicking thinking I had a leak or issue with a fuel pump or injector going out. I removed the fuel filter and redid it 3 times. Finally got the fuel pressure stable.
I hope I don't sound ignorant, but what is the advantage to using the International plug? Is it because it sticks out with spline aroung the outside? The picture I saw looks like it still uses the 6mm hex key. I'm just curious, not bashing.
As far as filters, I'm about to change them on my new (to me) '03 X. I don't what cheap quality filters, but I'd like the best deal. So who sells the best ones for the cheapest amount? Should I look for retailers that sell Racor filters? Are they packaged under different names? I have a NAPA pretty close by, otherwise, most places are a bit of a drive. Is it possible to still get them from International?
Like I said, I'm new to the 6.0, and I'm reading and learning.

Well for 1 thing, you can loosen and tighten by hand. Also use 6mm hex if you want. In a worst possible scenario you get a vise-grip or channel lock around it to loosen it. As far as the filters, the cheap ones probably won't be the best. Make sure what you buy has the water media around it. The ones for a late model IH LCF v-6 should fit. International should be able to help you with these.
I did not see a post that refers to a part number with a "2" at the end of it. Could you post the complete number your are referring to.
If you are referring to the International part number for fuel filters, the most current part number is 1847170C93. However, dealers that stock them but do not sell alot of them may still have old stock under part number 1847170C92.

16k now on the beast and I know that it is time for fuel filters(according to Ford they should be changed every 15k) Is this something that I can change? Where would I find the filters to purchase and how would I go about changing them. Thanks for all the help.

What I do:
With the tank at 1/2 full or less, put rear tires on a 2x8, thus putting the frame in a slight nose down attitude. Take the upper filter off, & out.
Drain the HFCM, by removing the IH drain plug (you do have the IH brass plug, not the factory plug w/ the 6mm hex key, right? - If you don't go get it, its the best $16 you'll spend on the truck). If you reach over the top of the front drive shat, you'll not get more than a drop or two on your fingers. Make sure you catch the fuel for examination. You should get about a quart, if it keeps running, put the plug back in & drive till you get below a 1/2 tank.
Shove some paper towels between the frame rail and the HFCM cap. Using a 36mm socket & 1/2" drive ratchet, remove the cap. (Lots of short strokes, and quite stiff for the 1st half). Filter will be attached to the cap. Remove old filter. This is where you might get some diesel on your fingers, but if you're careful with the paper towels, you won't get any down your arm.
Replace HFCM filter with new filter from IH. Place filter into HFCM and rotate until key in filter engages. Replace old o-ring on cap, and lube new one with a bit of motor oil. Replace cap (lots of short strokes with ratchet). Make sure cap seats fully. No need to reef on the cap, same for the drain plug - the o-ring is the seal. Replace drain plug.
Install top filter. Turn on & wait for pump to stop running, then turn to crank. Should fire right up.

You should have no trouble at all removing the drain plug even with the front shaft. When you've broken it loose with the 6mm hex wrench, reach over the top of the driveshaft & pull it out with your fingertips. After it drains, push the paper towels between the frame & the filter housing.
I can now do this change with no more than a few drops on my fingers.
And, I can't say it enough, that IH plug is worth all $16.
why is the IH plug better, and do you have a part number for it?!
thanks,
One of the advantages of having a pre-pump filter with 3/8" ball valves on the input and output, is that the flow from the tank is effectively cut off, eliminating the "diesel bath".
Do the engine filter, shut off the valves to the pre-pump filter, change out the HFCM filter, then change out the pre-pump and aux fuel filters (total of four).
The HFCM one isn't hard, just tedious.
And, I hope it doesn't have to be said: Please use only Motorcraft or IH filters. If the HFCM filter (the bigger of the two) doesn't have the white water separating film covering, don't use those filters.
The filter in the frame rail is terrible for one you cant turn the racthet even a quarter of a turn and its hard to get the filter cap out becuase the fuel line is right in the middle of everything!
The local International Dealership is approximately $15 bucks cheaper for the fuel filter than Diesel Filters Online but it is shipped right to your door.

Would these filters be bio diesel compatible? I'm planning on running b100 very soon.

Question: My HFCM filter was brown and H2O light was on dash prior. Should I expect a problem in the future with... ???

I don't have that large of a socket, but I did pick up an oil filter wrench I saw at Wally World to be able to grab the frame fuel filter black plastic lid. I can grab the area with the flat sides and use it kinda like a ratchet, I did the job in about 10% of the time if took me before.
I always save the one I remove from this area and the upper engine fuel filter. I noticed this last time there was a slight variance in the sizing. Is this normal, or not?
