For the F-350 to have that GVWR it must have been ordered with the optional 10,000 GVWR package.

10,000 GVWR PACKAGE (68D)
Availability:
Optional on F-350 SRW
Not available with:
Regular Cab 137" WB 4x2 w/5.4L and 17" wheels and NA on SuperCab 142" WB 4x2 w/5.4L and 17" wheels
Includes:
10,000 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

With out the option your F-350 would have had a GVWR of 11,000 if equipped with 17" wheels or a GVWR of 11,400 with 18"/20" wheels...

You talked to the wrong "dealer". Any Ford dealerperson worth his salt should be able to answer something like this:

The GVWR on a 2008 F-250 4x4 CC PSD is 10,000 pounds.

The GVWR on an F-350 SRW 4x4 CC PSD LWB is 11,500. The GVWR on an F-350 SRW 4x4 CC PSD SWB is 11, 400.

However, because some local jurisdictions have very high taxes on any pickup with more than 10,000 GVWR, some customers want the increased capacity of the F-350 SRW but with an "official" GVWR of 10,000 (or less). So Ford accomodates them. There is no difference in an F-350 SRW with a GVWR of 11,500 and one with 10,000 pounds, other than the Federal Certification Label that includes the GVWR number. But there is definitely a difference between an F-250 with 10k GVWR and an F-350 SRW with 10k GVWR.

If you look closely at the sticker on that F-350, you will see option code 68D, 10,000 GVWR Pkg. That's the key to the tax-avoiding scheme between Ford and their F-350 SRW customers in some areas that have higher taxes on over-10k GVWR.

Class A license

Another reason, we are finding is the drivers license requirements. In NC we are seeing the State Patrol stopping vehicles with large trailers. One of the things they look for is combined weight and whether the truck is licensed for that much weight. The other is whether the truck or the trailer has a gvwr of over 10,000 lbs. If either have a rating of over 10,000 lbs then the driver is required to have a class A non cdl drivers license. There fore if you had the 11,000 plus gvwr on the truck and a trailer of say 2000 lbs you would have to have a class A license. I think this is all based on federal regs and has not been enforced here before now. Grant
