'09 5R110 trans question

When I bought my '09 Super Duty V-10 I debated getting the automatic, I prefer a manual, but went ahead and got it.

I'm fixing to dump the fluid and was reading in the manual that the change is 17.5qts... includes remote filter element change. It must be very remote because I can't find it and the manual doesn't list it's location.

I did a search here and didn't see anything relavant to this so I could use some help...

Where is the remote filter element, how often is it necessary to change it and does it really take 17.5qts?

While I'm on the subject, I'm thinking of switching to Mobil1 (I run M1 engine oil in the V-10 anyway...) or does anyone have a better suggestion?

Assuming your 5R110 TorqShift tranny is the same as the one behind the '03-'07 6.0L diesel engine, then your ATF must meet MERCON SP specs. Mobil 1 ATF meets MERCON V but NOT MERCON SP specs.

And you'll probably find that MERCON SP is very hard to find anywhere except your Ford dealer. But if you use anything else, then say bye-bye to your tranny warranty, and the tranny will go south in a very few miles without the correct tranny fluid.

Here's the MERCON SP:
MERCON® SP Automatic Transmission Fluid

Some other major-brand ATF makers claim their ATF "can be used" in trannies that require MERCON V, as well as in trannies that require MERCON SP. Don't believe it. Ford says that no ATF can meet both specs. If the ATF doesn't state loud and clear that it meets MERCON SP specs, then don't buy it.

Yes, the tranny system (including torque converter, coolers, cooler lines, etc.) holds 17.5 quarts of MERCON SP ATF. It requires 20 quarts to do a good flush and fill.

It should be the same, it doesn't specify 'gas' or 'diesel' in the manual.

Okay, MERCON LV is a new one. I see it on the Motorcraft website now, but I've never heard of it before. Of course I don't pay a lot of attention to anything newer than the last of the 7.3L diesels.

Ford killed the original MERCON a coupla years ago, so there's now MERCON V, MERCON SP, and MERCON LV, plus the other Ford tranny fluids:.

Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid
FNR5 Automatic Transmission Fluid
Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid
Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid
Synthetic Blend MERCON® V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid
Type F Automatic Transmission Fluid and Power Steering Fluid

Here's the website if you care to chase down other Ford ATFs:

The regular Owner's Guide assumes you have a gasoline engine. There is a PowerStroke Owner's Guide Supplement that gives a lot of info on the high-priced (but worth it!) diesel engine., including different lube and maintenance requirements.
