I'm looking at trading in my old F350 on a brand spank'n new F250 Lariot. 2 questions Id like to know from you guys that I don't trust the dealer to answer honestly.....
-Fuel economy city/highway towing/empty
-is the 6.4 as good an engine as the old 7.3?
Thanks one and all for any advice you can give me.
My (still stock) 2008 XLT runs like a champ. 12,000 miles no problems. A word of advise. Check under the seats, dash and chassis for excessive rust. Word is several trucks had this. Mine sure as hell did. Didn't notice until I read about it here (about a month after buying it). Expect about 13 mpg (empty) after about 10,000 miles of break in. Sorry, no towing info.

I am thinking with an F-250 your running considerably lighter than say a F-450. Gearing will also not be the same 4:30LS. Just a guess, I would look at 11 to start and as the break in continues it will get better.
Now the F-450 is different. It is heavy to begin with. It comes with a pretty high gear 4:30s which are not optimal for highway mileage. Now you talk about pulling or hauling something and you get the purpose of this beast.
If I am not mistaken the beast of old was only getting 5-7 MPG if memory serves me. it wasn't designed for mileage. In fact you just didn't buy one if you were thinking of mileage being a concern.
I may be wrong but broke in these 250s very well may be getting 15 plus. They have this big powerful engine and a total weight of 5800 to 6400 dry weight. Couple that to a
gear ring lower than 3:73s and the mileage can be fairly decent. I have seen the writings where a gearing lower than that mentioned is why I brought it up.

My 450 has the 4.88 rear, which is not offered anymore. I am getting 11-13 mpg doing a 50-50 mixture of highway and city driving with the truck empty. When I hook my 14K 5th wheel camper to it, I am getting 7-9 mpg.
Also, the higher the number for gear ratio(4.30 or 4.88), this means the gears are "low" gears(better for pulling). The lower the number, (3.73) is a "higher" or "taller" gear, better for highway use and better fuel mileage.......

You have 4:88s and are getting 11-13 MPG dry? I am surprised and happy. That gives me hope for the 4:30s. Are you running the 19.5 wheel? I think all the 6.4s are aren't they? I know the 6.7 dropped to the 17 which does not make for my dream truck at all. If all goes well and the creeks don't rise, I may also see 13, maybe even a grip better......maybe. That would also mean I could get a little better while towing 15K. The 7.3 got real close to 12 while pulling. If I can muster 10.5, I will be happy as hell. That was my intention for the truck. To pull with a completely safe platform. If I get close with MPG, that is even better yet. Thanks for info.

My 09 with 5k on it gets 17 daily driving and if I go interstate and keep it at 72 mph, I can get a soild 18. Drove from Central MD to Central IL on I-70 and averaged 18.1 out and 17.9 back. Truck was empty with driver and passenger only. My daily commute is about 12 miles on flat to rolling 2 lane road with a few stoplights.

Pretty much stock for now
No doubt the 6.4 is a better engine than the 6.0 leaker. The only issues I would have with the 6.4 (and I don't have one, but have talked with my dealer's diesel service manager) is that it is a short life engine, as in, Ford has a new diesel entering the market next year. Other issues are the "soot bag", regen every XXX miles, and the fact that to work on it, one must lift the entire cab. I understand that the new Ford diesel will not have a soot bag and will not have regen and you can work on it w/o lifting the cab. The other issues are after the warranty runs out, it would seem to me that the lower number of total engines made, the higher the rebuild cost will be as there will be less engines to work with. If I was lookng at a new Ford diesel, I'd wait a year and get the new Ford built diesel. No more International interference should make a mighty fine engine.

The 6.4 PowerStroke is also known as the Maxxforce 7 so you have the Navistar source for common parts.
Lifting the cab is not required, just easier and quicker in many cases. If you have a C&C truck for example that has been upfitted in such a way that you cannot remove the cab Ford will work on and pay for warranty hours based on not removing the cab.
I believe that your understanding that the 6.7 Scorpion will not have a DPF/Regen is incorrect.

I have 4:88s and have never gotten double digits unloaded. I get 5-7 towing my 13K pound Weekend Warrior (toy box). The new F450 is a glorified F250. Lighter frame, lighter duty axles, 17" wheels and higher speed limit. Don't get me started on the rear fenders! I think the 2008-2010 F450 will have a better resale because they are truly "heavy duty".
Yea, I get 12 all day every day(hand calculated), and another mile if I keep the speed down. I did put the job 3 air dam on it. A friend of mine has one with the 4.30's. He put the job 3 air dam on and uses the Ford Fuel conditioner crap, and he is getting 13-14. Most people I know don't get any better than me.
