-Hey Guys! At the end of October here I'm buying a 2010 F-350 6.4L but I have some people trying to convince me to go with the gas 5.4 or 6.8 instead. One of which owns a 350 Harley 6.4L and says his oil changes at the dealership or a Lube city is around 300 bucks to change each time... I Don't understand how that is... Is it true????
-Another question I have since I hear so many doing their own oil changes; I was almost 1000% positive for years you could never even think about keeping your warranty doing your own oil change, especially with an 8000 dollar motor. Can you do your own oil change and keep Warranty?
-And lastly I keep being told I'm going to be getting 8-9 MPG (mixed driving) unless I have Ford put in the DPF delete which will raise it to 16 MPG (mixed driving). Yet I still see guys driving properly on these forums getting at least 14 MPG Stock which is nothing to brag about but much better than 8 MPG. So what are you guys getting for Mileage with the 6.4L?
1) The oil change will not cost $300.00 but your materials are expensive. Truck holds 15L and a $20.00 filter.
2) Ford will honour the warranty if you service yourself as long as you have all the relevant documentation to support regular intervals, i.e., keep a log of date and mileage as well as your receipts for materials.
3) Your mileage will vary on the truck but you should see around 14. My dually sees about that, mixed, with a 4.10 rear end. BTW, Ford will not install a DPF delete for you. The dealer might but that will instantly void a lot of your warranty and in some states is illegal.

As already said a oil filter is ~$20 and 15l of oil at ~$3/l for regular or ~$5/l for full synthetic so ~$80 in materials for regular oil and ~$95 for full synthetic. My local non dealership shop I use if we don't do it ourselves charges ~$120 for a oil change with regular oil and ~$150 for a oil change with full synthetic.
I could see getting charged $300 at the dealer if they changed the oil and fuel filters and used full synthetic.
Mixed driving a 09 F-350 Harley truck I see ~15mpg (US) and ~19mpg (US) on the highway at 110km/h.
All of these numbers (oil change costs and mileage figures) are pretty similar to that of all of the 6.0 trucks I have had.
So far that's what I expected. And you guys are from Alberta as well, so prices should be damn near the same for an oil change. Regarding the mileage, he must be just driving the heck out of her (pedal to the floor everywhere). I think there blowing a lot of smoke up my a$$... But more opinions are welcome, I love hearing everyone's point of view. Thanks you guys for the replies so far
don't know about $$$ for oil i have only had mine for two weeks. but i did do some unloaded highway driving this weekend to the tune of 14.8 on the computer. and around 11 in town. thinking about the mods but still not sure it will help.
The Ford dealership in Barrhead, Alberta puts on that DPF delete straight through exhaust which just about doubled mileage on my buddy's 350 6.4L Harley while keeping his full warranty. He went from average of 9MPG to 16-17MPG. I still think there was something wrong with his truck to begin with and he drives her too hard, but I did see first hand that it made the difference.
Mine runs me 75 at the dealer with my friend(who works there) driving it to work changing oil and bringing it back. Best deal I have found around here.

If I do it myself, which is not very often, my 6.8 V-10, will cost me around $25. At the dealer it is around $29.95 depending on what coupons I have. My mileage is around 11.5-12 around town with the 4.10 rear. I also saved $6,000+ from the beginning by going to a V-10 and I have no regen issues either. You won't lack for power with a V-10, just the opposite.

Once again, location matters. Lets say ~$30/$40 (regular/synthetic) to change the oil yourself in a 6.8l truck and the diesel is a $8070 Cdn list option that you will pay ~$6400 for.
But due to things like the picture below a gas powered Super Duty in Alberta is going to be hard to find (unless you want a no frills fleet truck) and even harder to sell along with the fact that if you go to sell three years down the road the resale value difference on a 6.8l is going to be a bigger number than the $6400 you saved. I played the V-10 game already and for us when we keep a truck for 3 years or 100,000km the numbers do not work out in the V-10's favour.
When diesel is less than gas, the math tends to work out. Around here, diesel hasn't been less than gas since around 2001-2002. For a while, the price difference was large enough that there was no way the math would ever work out. Now it's about 20 cents more per gallon, but we haven't been hit with the heating oil price surge yet. It will go up. The way I see it, the cost of loan interest in the initial purchase and the cost of maintenance will eat any gain in resale. By my calculation, break even on diesel vs gas for my situation is 180,000 miles. But, it's actually likely to be more because diesel here is low right now and the prices haven't risen yet due to heating fuel.
Break even numbers will be different for different people. Depends on how much towing you do, how often you run empty, what purchase price you can get, how long you keep your truck, etc, etc.
Jasonmt, I'm in Edmonton as well. Where do you pick your oil up?
Also, dealer in Barrhead installed the DPF delete while maintaining the warranty? Does you buddy have signed paper work to that effect? I thought the warranty would be instantly bye-bye.
...Sorry about the hijack.
