I think the F-450 tires won't be any more expensive in the long run. These are commercial truck tires and should easily give 75-100,000 miles before replacement. Since the brakes are bigger they should last longer because they aren't stressed as much in stopping. The mileage is lower because these are big, heavy trucks. I have the 4.30 axle ratio and I'm getting around 12-13 mpg (running empty) on the interstate but staying around 65mph.

Also the warranty (milage) on the F450 is less due to the fact that it is considered to be a commercial vehicle.

The 450 drive train and brakes are heavy duty compared to the 350. they will last longer with a 350 load than a 350 will with the same load. I have had my toy hauler towed with a 350 3.73 gears and a 450 with 4.30. the 350 pulled and stopped fine but it worked harder todo it, The 450 does not even know it is there in comparison, but it does get worse fuel mileage. I am not sure how much is due to the new emissions , but I get around 3 MPG less. Even with out it working so hard. I can't say for other states but for PA the Class A does not go into effect untill the rig is registered for over 26,000. The key is registered. These guys who are having issues with insurance and and licenses are registered for the full 14500. as long as the truck and trailers registration is under 26000 it is considered under a regular class C license 10500 GVWR truck and a 15500 trailer. I think that the 14500 registration is the problem with the Insurance, I believe that they consider anything overr 14000 a comercial vehichle.

Seems that those that do not own a F-450 pickup really do not know much about the truck but like to add uninformed comments. First, I do not need a commercial drivers license to tow a heavy (22k) fifth wheel with my 450. Insurance was not an issue. I have coverage with USAA(best damn insurance company there is), my premiums actually went down with the 450 from what I paid for the 250. Other than the increased cost of fuel, ownership costs for a non-commercial rv tower will probably be less than the cost for a 350 due to commercial grade components. Warranty: a F-450 pickup gets the same warranty as the guy that buy a 250/350, there is no difference. Where in the hell did you read that there is a difference? To seperate fact from fiction, when you see a 450 in a parking lot, ask the owner if he/she would mind sharing some insight into the ownership of their truck. Most would be happy to share. That way you will know the truth, not what an owner of an truck long out of production wants you to believe.

Are you sure about the job 3 450's only being available with 4.30's? You can still configure them with 4.88's online...

However, with automagic tranny the GCWR is 33,000 pounds, or that mythical 24,500 pounds towing capacity you mentioned. But of course that much towing capacity means you are driving a stripped truck with absolotely nothing in the truck but one skinny driver, so the wet and loaded weight of the truck is no more than 8,500 pounds before you tie onto the trailer.

For your ignorant "car" salesmen, suggest they refer to the order guide for the F-450 pickup. On page 1 it includes the Job 3 changes, including those I mentioned above.

Or get your own copy. Click on this >>> Sunrise Ford Fleet, 16005 Valley Blvd, Fontana, Ca, 92335 and download the order guide from their download section.

However, if you meant the F-450 chassis cab truck, then 4.88 is standard and 4.30 is optional, and either one can have limited slip or not. The order guide for that one is different than for that city-boy pickup. The max available GCWR is 30,000 pounds, or 3,000 pounds less than the pickup. No, I don't know why.
There's your answer.

Shawn
