The 6.4 is the best diesel Ford used in the superduty. The 08-10 truck is the best styling.
Find an F450 with the 430 gearing in it, either 08 or 09. Mine has 133000 miles on it, has saved my life once and as long as I have to pull this will be what pulls.
I've got an '09 F450 King Ranch with 85K on it, and it's had some warranty work done, but I'm loving the truck! I load it up with a heavy 9' 10" Arctic Fox camper, and then add an 18' trailer loaded up, and it truly 'hauls' wonderfully, as well as holds back on the hills great as well with 'tow' mode engaged. You just can't go wrong, so long as you do your homework, and have all and any warranty issues topped up prior to receiving it. The tuner/dpf delete can eventually help you out with longevity as well.

6.4 Diesel, 4.30's.
i have an 08 f-450 with 117,000 miles on it with 4.88 rear .
yes it runs at higher rpm's than other trucks with lesser gears has less gas milage, but if i want better fuel economy i'll drive the mini cooper .
this truck hauls my 32' tow behind , bed filled with 3 dirt bikes like it is empty . i had an 02 f-250 gas and was tired of being under powered and marginal awww factor .This truck turns heads and leaves the others in the dust .
I was looking for the f-350 and found a better deal on the 450 . At the time i wanted a diesel , 05 or newer 30,000$ range and now have more truck than i need. Just do some homework and the money you save buying a used truck can more than pay for the dpf/egr/and mini max set ups .
I must have had one of the Bad ones. I had an early build 08' 450. I Traded it in with 45k on it due to three radiators in three years. On the third radiator I asked the dealer what was the diff between this one and the last two? Reply, Not a thing. Fuel milage was also terrible, it had the 4.88's. towed are horse trailers great when it wasn't in for service, just not a reliable truck. I traded it in on a 2012 and couldn't be happier. Moral of the story, if you see a big red 450 for sale with 45k plus out of the seattle area, keep on looking you want nothing to do with it.
If you got three identical radiators then your dealer didn't know what he was doing. They did make a chnage (they knew they were duds) and not there are aftermarket radiators out there with lifetime guarantees.
Mine went 104000mi and Ford paid for the replacement.

get the 450 you will not regret the larger truck. I'm running a 350 now and its not enough truck with 12,000 lbs. Have already added springs and replaced rear axle. Looking for a super duty or 550 to replace it.
GD, Thanks for the insight, I had a brand new truck that with in 45k it had three radiators. I was glad to see it go, regardless if they new something was a dud or if they had fixed something. my wife drives most of the western states for horse shows and that truck was not reliable, the standin joke was that we should carry a spare radiator in the back for roadside replacment.
6.4 is a good motor. with a vin you can ask the sa at your local dealer to run it for you to see.
Af350 is a 1 ton. F450 is overkill for you.
F350 either srw or dually will do just fine. either 3.73 or 4.30 gears does not matter.
I tow heavy with mine all the time. I would not want a 7.3 or a 6.0. simply because they don't have the power or the nicer interiors. When you spend alot of time behind the wheel that counts.
I have 74K and 1900 hours on my motor and it has been just fine.
Wow!!!! The 7.3 doesn't have the power??????? I guess that's why everyone wants to buy my truck!!!! LOL ;-) I get offers almost daily. The ONLY diesel produced since 10/2002 that can come close to competing with my 2003 F250 7.3 is the new 6.7. I might have an advantage @ 400+ Hp & 850 lbft tq. Every time I look into trading up, the $65,000 sticker shock scares me away.
Anyhow, my little brother is looking into a 2010 F250 with the 6.4L. Trying to steer him away from that fuel sucker. He is on a budget & needs a newer truck. My advice was to go with Dodge from 10/2002 thru 2010, unless he could swing a 6.7L. That is hard for me to say being a "Die Hard" Ford guy. I haven't met many people that are totally happy with the 6.0L or the 6.4L. Biggest complaint, a side from the early "Fire Breathing" 6.4L, is the crappy mileage. The 6.0's just need too much (For my brother's mechanical aptitude) to be reliable. So....... As long winded as this is, and in the event my brother HAS to have a 2010 F250 6.4L, any Cinderella stories????
By the way, NO offense to you 6.0 & 6.4 guys. I'm "Die Hard" Ford, just love the 7.3!

I agree. For a lot less than $65K I believe I can make a lot of RELIABLE power and torque. $65,000.00?!? Really? That is ridiculous when you really think about it. And next year the'll be $70K, and after that, $75K....it never stops! In this day, what with the economy like it is, houses have sold for less. The real sad thing is, when you drive that $65K truck off the lot it's worth what, $45K? Folks around here can't give away a 6.0. Everyone's afraid of them. 6.4's not a lot better. And now the 6.7's are freaking everyone out over the water in the fuel system. It may be the best truck in the world. Get a little water in the fuel pump....cha-ching!!! $12 grand!!! No thanks. I'll keep my 7.3.
If your 7.3 is putting out 400hp and 850lb-ft of torque, it is far from stock, correct? I have a 6.4 that is putting out about 500hp and 1100lb-ft of torque. All I've done is a DPF delete and a tuner. And my truck is way more relaible than it was simply because of that.
While you may not have met many people who like their 6.4's, my experience has been the opposite. I love MY trucks, and almost every person I've met has said their's is awesome.
I've had 3 of them, and have loved every one. The interior is light years beyond the model year 2007 and prior trucks. And although the fuel mileage is not amazing, it is not bad IF you drive in a reasonable manner. I have had 3 different '08 F450's. The first 2 were automatic 4.30 axle trucks. Both of those averaged 12.5 to 13 mpg combined, about 16 highway if I kept it around 65. I now have a manual transmission truck with 4.88 axle. It got 13-13.5mpg combined and 15mpg at 60-65mph highway. After delete it gets almost 15mpg avg and 17mpg if I go 60 on the highway. The reason it is not so good on the highway is higher speeds create really high revs with that 4.88 axle. Only "engine" problems I have experienced with my trucks is a radiator with the first one and a coolant hose with the second. My second truck DID have the engine replaced due to EGR failure by the previous owner. No issues for me with my current truck, nor were there many for the previous owner from the warranty history report.
