Extended Warrenty Question

I have a 08 550 with 42000 or so miles. It is a worktruck.

1) Can I still purchase an extended warrenty??

2) If yes, do I buy from the Ford Dealer or can I purchase a Ford warrenty

independantly as in online??

Thanks,

Yes, you should be able to purchase your extended warranty from your dealer. I specifically asked if I could buy one when I'm reaching the end of my factory warranty.

You can also purchase them from independet warranty dealers, but my Ford dealer told me that a lot of the independent dealers make you pay for your repairs out of pocket then the reimburse you.

I know you'll take a hit on the extened warranty from your daler as opposed to buying it at the time of purchase of your vehicle. (My deler told me that outright.) I opted to to pass at the time of purchase, but am kind of wondering if I should have bought it. Oh well, live and learn...

Edit: You might want to check with your dealer. Now that I think about it, he said something about buying it at least a month or 1000 mi. (something like that anyway) before your warranty expires.

Well, I just got back for the local dealer, where I purchases the truck to begin with.

Since I let it get past 36000 miles, I only have one option: A 7-year/200,000 mile coverage, 13 covered components.

Internal Lubricated parts
Cylinder Block
Cylinder Heads
Oil PUmp
Timing Chain Cover
Timing Chain
Turbocharger
Cylinder Head Gasket
Crankcase Oil Cooler DGR Cooler
Fuel Injection Pump
Fuel Injectoion Pressure Reg
Fuel Injectors

All this for $1970.

I don't have enought mechanical knowledge to know if this covers most or not.

Anybody have any thoughts??

The dealers will always tell you this because they want you to buy the warranty from them. Ask them how much the dealer profits from each plan sold and how much commission goes to the salesperson...when I worked at the dealerships the profit was almost half the price of the policy. I doubt you'll get an honest answer though.

Unless it has changed, yes, you must purchase the warranty before your bumper to bumper coverage expires. Some independant companies may sell a policy after the factory warranty has expired though.

Buying an extended warranty is much like gambling. You're betting that you will incur expenses greater than the cost of the policy and the insurer is betting the expenses will be less than the policy price. Obviously the underwriting company is the "house", and the favor is always with the house. Otherwise they would not be in business for long. Therefore, if using an independent warranty company, find out who the underwriter is. If it's a nationally known company you should be fine. Lesser known companies will be more likely to "tank". These things happen. With the current global economy there can be no guarantees.

Use this information to compare with independant companies. Check with local credit unions, they often have solid underwriters and their profit is often under $400.00 for each policy. What you are being offered is a 200K mile "powertrain" warranty. These diesels often go 200K miles and more with no major engine problems. Certainly if they did, many of the covered parts with labor would likely cost in excess of the total policy. Also look for exemption clauses, like injector damage not covered if loss caused by fuel contamination. Generally speaking, injector issues are almost always caused by foreign material in the fuel system (water). Look around, I think you can do better.

Good luck with the aftermarket companies, My buddy bought one and his truck was repaired in October, he's still waiting for the $2800 payment from the warranty company. It was preapproved but they just aren't writing the check.

That's why I bought one that the dealers contact directly and bill directly. Plus, mine is a Platinum plan that has a zero deductible. When checking out a company, call your local dealer's service dept. (or whoever works on your truck) and ask them how user friendly the company is to work with. You can check with the BBB in your area too. One of the best things about aftermarket companies is the freedom of being able to have someone other than the dealer work on your truck. And I see from many complaints listed on this site (and others) that many folks are not happy with the dealers service depts. Just choose carefully. Good luck, and Happy New Year!
