That's actually exactly how progressive wrote the policy when USAA handed me over to their "special agents" and for just the truck as a personal vehicle being used as a pleasure vehicle with a maximum of 12000 miles a year. It's a commercial policy with a farm use application (I also need the truck to move a tractor, but not for profit) and my quote was(better sit down) $1,086.50 for 6 months and I had to pay 10% of the yearly premium to start the policy.

Geico wants $942.90/6 months and I got E-surance to shop it around and they landed with SafeCo with a quote of $880/6months if I pay the premium in full every 6 months.

I don't know guys, I think my F-450 ownership might be over before it starts. I still have to hear back from some local brokers but it's not looking good.

BTW, where are you located? Cause my dad has a farm truck that sees the highway when it goes to the farm or hauls a fertilizer cart from the CO-OP and the insurance on it is $300 every 6 months, mind you the fact its only a F-250, so its only a 3/4 ton not a ton and a half like you have, but it sees just about the same amount of miles as yours does each year.

I live in Maryland. I think the fact that I'm 29 and don't own a home is killing me, well, that and the fact that word is out that the F-450 has a GVW of 14,500. What's so frustrating is that all the insurance companies say "Oh, any truck that has a GVW over 10,001 pounds or more is commercial." To which my response is "Do you realize that almost every F-350 SRW and DRW built from 2005 to present technically can't be insured as private vehicle going by your GVW guidelines?" Once I say that I get quite a bit of static on the other end.

I'm going to keep beating the bushes and see what I can shake loose for a lower quote. Wish me luck!!!!!

Good luck - thats exactly why I gave up and bought my '02 DRW. Down the road I may upgrade to F550 axles for the brakes, but will have to regear to 4.10 in order to keep a little highway-ability.

I think the fact that my F-450 came as a pickup truck and not the "Cab on Chassis" that the pre-2008 F-450s came as is the difference. It's insured just like my F-350 before it was. I didn't even realize that insurance was an issue with people till I started reading this thread.

Guys, if you need coverage for your F450 let me know. We have a ton of different companies that will cover it no problem. We offer great rates and awesome personalized customer service. If you need multiple online quotes just fill out our simple form. It is very important to find a company that will cover this particular risk at a great rate. Also there are a lot of discounts our carriers will give you if you have several vehicles on the policy.

How did you get USAA to do it, they would not insure my F450 they sent me to progressive. Way to much. I ended up with travelers for $768 per year. Same coverage as yours.

Same here except Progressive gave us a package deal with the fiver, so we stayed with them. In reality, when I call Progressive concerning my policy, I'm actually talking with a USAA General Agency rep.
