Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has taken their 08 f450 on the beach with or without stock tires? I'd like to take mine out surf fishing but am alittle concerned putting a 9,000 lb vehicle in soft sand with tires that are not meant to be aired down. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Todd
Thats just what I'm worried about Mr. Jimi. Most of the sand around here is really soft and the last thing I want to do is try to dig out this big A** truck.
Thanks
I won't be doing it. I had a 2004 F-250 6.0PSD 4x4 and even with the 265/16s aired down to 10psi it plowed hard through the soft OBX sand. That truck weighed 8,000lbs, this 450 tips the scales at 9,000 with six(6) skinny 19.5s that I can't air down too much. Nope, guess I will have to find a nice CJ-7 to tow behind the big truck next visit to Hatteras. Imagine the tow bill for extracting one of the beasts from deep sand?

I used to take a GMC K-3500 4X4 dually dump out on the beach on Cape Cod all the time and only had problems when I wouldn't air down. I was 19 and all knowing and figured my badazz ride didn't need to do that. I would take it out and would struggle to get anywhere and get passed by some POS and scratch my head as to why, then one day I relented and listened to someone (a pretty tough feat for a 19 y/o K.I.A ) and it was a whole new truck performance wise.
As long as you air down the tires you will be all set. Airing down is when you lower the pressures down to 15psi or whatever the law/rule is for where you are. By lowering the psi you increase the surface area of the tire which in turn gives you the flotation you need for running in the sand.
I suggest you not try airing down the 19.5's on the 450. They have much stiffer sidewalls than what any 350 comes with, plus good chance the rear duallys will make contacts and damage their sidewalls. Now of course if I could get my hands on some nice, larger diameter, fat, soft 19.5 super singles
BTW, I spent my youth driving all over the beaches out on Nantucket, what a blast we had, me in my CJ-7, buddy in his fantastic 1970 302 powered Bronco, driving up to Great Point, hitting the stripers when they were running hot. Memories of wonderful summers.

I hear ya Captskup! I had an 83 CJ7 years ago. It was great on the beach for fishing. I'd love to take the family out in the f450 but was concerned about sinking with the stock tires, even aired down. I believe most tires for the 19.5 rims are commercial grade with the hard sidewalls for towing so I guess I would have to upgrade to a nice set of 22's but then I limit my towing, Oh Well Thanks for the info guys I appreciate it!
I have seen some pretty agressive tires on super single rims bolted to some F-450-550 chassied fire apparatus. If you plan on frequenting the beach it may be worth the invesment to you. I'll see if I can find a link for you.
Here is a link to the company that uses 19.5'' super singles on F-450 and 550 trucks. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the front rim. If you browse around the site you will see many pictures of trucks using super singles.
Eng1driver,
Thats a pretty cool set up. I think it would be alittle too much work switching out wheels all the time. I sure wish I didn't have use my truck for work too!
I can tell you, that the 450 will sink in the sand, especially with the tires aired up. I was down the shaore recently and was backing the trailer over a small packed mound of sand, and the front tires dug right into the sand, once I turned the wheels, they acted as a plow and dug deeper. I would not trust taking mine on the beach.
