question about the 6.4 exhaust

Im thinking about buying a 08 6.4. My dealer said that i can remove the dpf and that wont cause any problems. Wont that cause problems not just because of the back pressure sensors but because of the computer on the truck? Im new to the site. Any help would be nice.
Thanks Jake

if you remove the filter, you have to have a tune to turn off the regens. There is a thread about it, here

Jake,

You need to find another dealer. The person who told you that has no business selling vehicles. They have told you its OK to break the law.

It is against Federal law to tamper with any emissions device in any way. There are a few who will tell you its no big deal, but its still illegal, and if you remove the DPF, you no longer have a truck you can legally license, in any state in the Union.

I agree, there is a ethical issue here. If you decide later on your own accord that is one thing but another for him to sell you a truck with the insinuation you should do something illegal and against Ford warranty policies. Call Ford and see if they support his recommendation.

I wouldn't be comfortable with any further negotiations....

You 2 need to chill. LOL

I believe they also sell you a speedometer that goes over the the speed limit. I'm pretty sure you guys drive faster then the posted limits at times.... I believe the truck is electronically limited to not go over 100mph!

I guess Ford needs to stop selling trucks that will exceed the speed limit. Oh my goodness we must stop this to protect the children !!

Give me a break, the question was can he just remove the DPF. I don't beleive there was any request for lectures from you guys.

The answer seems to be that it really isn't a good idea at this time because of the regen logic. But it is your truck.

The real issue is that a dealer is not giving him correct information. There is an issue with the regen so he will need a tuner to control that function. And the other problem is exactly as OMCUSNR stated; it is a federal offense to tamper with it. Of course, he can take it off. It is his truck, but he then must suffer any consequences that may arise. If the dealer didn't fill him in on both of those points, ol Jake might not be a happy boy. The dealer should have told him that instead of saying it's no problem. So Jake, take 23608's advice; Find another dealer. You can get a great deal from anyone right now. This one might not have your best interest at heart.

I tore the "DO NOT REMOVE UNDER THE PENALTY OF THE LAW" tag off my recliner and so far no furniture police have showed up.

It's been about four months...can I go outside yet??

Just curious to who actually polices these laws? I posted a topic awhile back about someone I know with a 6.4 and they want better fuel mileage, and I just wanted to know that if you take off the dpf and lose the regen will you get better fuel mileage? But, instead I got hounded on breaking a Federal law. I was only wondering.

But, for someone that can put 10,000 miles on a truck in a month, there would be a significant desire for better fuel mileage. Perhaps you were fined for deleting the dpf or cat on your truck, how much do ya'll think it might cost? 1000$? 2000$? That would be a small price to pay in fuel consumption per year for many people driving a 6.4 that went from say 12-14mpg to maybe 16-18mpg simply by deleting the dpf and regen process.

Simple economic opportunity cost. Just something to think about.

Matt

Then take it a step farther. Say, rob three banks next year. Clear x number of dollars. If you get caught, and only do three years, you may still be money ahead. I know that's a little over the top, but breaking the law and taking your chances is the mind set of most criminals.

Nice! But, we aren't even in the same ball park. You paid the money for the truck, its yours, whatever you do with it is your own decision. This will be argued forever, regardless. I don't have a cat in my exhaust. Do I go to jail? Been 230,000 miles they must still be looking for me. Maybe I should rob a bank and haul ass with my truck and and dump smoke so that they can bust me for the robbery and breaking emissions laws.

I was just curious as to who actually enforces the law, EPA? Has anyone ever been caught? Or know someone who has?

Usually we just weigh the odds of being caught and go from there.

Just my two cents here.

1) Really research the emissions testing time's for not only your state, but your county as well.

2) What ever you do to your truck (i.e. DPF delete, straight pipe, tuner, what have you), make sure you can bring it back to factory specs if need be....
or as close as you can make it that way.

NEVER forget that our country's railroads use 1/2 of the diesel consumed here in our great U.S. AND IT IS TOTALLY UN-REGULATED!!!
How is that for the EPA doing something about our emmisions
~Mike~
